Prologue
Hashimoto Masayoshi's monologue reveals a deep-seated mistrust of others and a belief that betrayal is inevitable. He expresses a cynical worldview, advocating for a self-serving approach to life rather than placing trust in others. Despite his name, which carries connotations of justice, Masayoshi has abandoned any aspirations of upholding moral principles.
Driven by a desire for revenge against those who have wronged him, Masayoshi is determined to climb to the top of Class A, regardless of the methods he must employ. He is willing to engage in deceit and manipulation, even if it means sacrificing his relationships with others. His resolve remains unshaken, regardless of the identities of his adversaries, including his classmates and even Ayanokōji.
Ultimately, Masayoshi's monologue reveals a character driven by a singular focus on his own goals and a willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve them, even if it means abandoning notions of justice and morality.
Chapter 1
As the crowds filled the streets on the way to school, Kiyotaka found himself unexpectedly enjoying the bustling atmosphere after the serene winter break. His girlfriend, Kei, noticed his pause and inquired about it, her warmth enveloping his arm as he notices her favourite lipstick being worn. Kiyotaka appreciated the simple pleasure of walking with her, finding solace in their daily routine together. However, he reflected on the balance between the benefits and drawbacks of their relationship. While spending time with Kei improved his communication skills and provided valuable insights into relationships, he sometimes struggled to respond appropriately, particularly when handling her moods. Despite these challenges, Kiyotaka acknowledged the significance of their time together in refining his interpersonal abilities.
Kei's playful comment about him staring at her face prompted a light-hearted exchange, with Kiyotaka expressing her desire to kiss him again. Reflecting on their last day of winter break spent together, Kiyotaka hinted at the intimacy they shared during that time, suggesting a closeness that extended beyond the classroom. Kei greeted her friends cheerfully before parting ways with Kiyotaka, leaving him to settle into the classroom. Despite the ease of carrying fewer items thanks to tablets, Kiyotaka still found his bag indispensable. Sudō, already in the classroom, teased Kiyotaka about his public display of affection, expressing both embarrassment and envy.
Their conversation shifted to a school email warning about inappropriate behavior during winter break. Kiyotaka emphasized the importance of discretion on school grounds, citing the risk of surveillance cameras and vigilant observation. Sudō, surprised by Kiyotaka's unique perspective, apologized for his reaction, revealing his own struggles with balancing academics and sports. Kiyotaka, sensing Sudō's fatigue, offered a word of advice about pacing oneself. Despite Sudō's attempt to brush off his concerns, Kiyotaka noted the significance of maintaining a healthy balance between studies and extracurricular activities. Sudō appreciated the support and expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Kiyotaka in the upcoming term, signaling a renewed focus on their academic endeavors.
Satō remarked on Kiyotaka and Kei's closeness, thanking them for 'a meal' which was analogous to her entertainment. Chabashira-sensei entered the classroom to deliver a New Year's greeting and some important announcements. Despite her words of focus, Chabashira-sensei's slightly disheveled appearance undercut her message, as she seemed to have rushed to school that morning. She then informed the class about an upcoming "student-teacher discussion" scheduled for the next month, which would involve discussions about career choices and school life, with input from parents. While some students expressed surprise at this initiative, Ike was the first to speak up, as usual.
Kiyotaka reflected on the implications of this discussion, considering his own situation and the potential involvement of his father, referred to as "That man." However, he recognized that his future wasn't entirely within his control, and he viewed the discussion as a formality. For his classmates, though, it could represent a significant crossroads in their lives. Chabashira-sensei concluded her announcements and left the classroom, but not before realizing she had a bit of bedhead.
After Chabashira-sensei's departure, the class engaged in discussions about the upcoming student-teacher conference and their future plans. Yōsuke revealed his intention to pursue university education regardless of Class A privileges, driven by his parents' expectations and his own academic aptitude. Despite assumptions that Yōsuke might pursue a career in soccer, he clarified that his passion for the sport would remain a hobby, acknowledging the high barriers to professional sports careers. Instead, he emphasized the importance of pursuing higher education for his future. Keisei advocated for aiming for prestigious corporate jobs, citing the stability and security they offer. His argument resonated with classmates, highlighting the allure of stable careers provided by Class A privileges.
However, another perspective emerged, emphasizing the importance of pursuing one's passion and ideal career rather than prioritizing stability alone. This viewpoint acknowledged the complexity of decision-making and the diversity of individual aspirations among the students. As the discussion unfolded, Kiyotaka reflected on the multitude of choices and the uncertainty inherent in decision-making. He recognized that there were no definitive right or wrong choices, and that the true measure of success would only become apparent in hindsight, through reflection on one's past decisions and their outcomes.
As lunchtime approached, Kiyotaka observed Kei walking with her friends to the cafeteria, acknowledging the importance of maintaining friendships alongside romantic relationships. As Horikita and Kushida joined him, Kiyotaka posed a question about why girls often walk side by side in groups. Horikita speculated that it might be due to a hierarchical dynamic and the need to maintain group formation.
Their conversation then shifted, with Horikita surprising Kiyotaka by offering to treat him to lunch. Despite Kiyotaka's initial reluctance based on past experiences, he eventually agreed. Kushida's presence added an unexpected twist to the invitation, leading Kiyotaka to wonder about their intentions. As they headed out, Horikita suggested going somewhere less crowded than the cafeteria, hinting at a possible stop at a convenience store or food stall. The trio walked together, albeit with Horikita leading the way and Kiyotaka and Kushida following behind. The revelation that Horikita intended for them to eat Ibuki's homemade lunchbox caught Kiyotaka off guard. He expressed his concern, especially considering Ibuki's lack of cooking skills in the past. Horikita explained that she had been helping Ibuki improve her cooking by providing balanced meals.
As they continued their conversation, it became clear that Ibuki had challenged herself to cook for them after Horikita teased her about her cooking abilities. Despite the initial reluctance, Ibuki seemed determined to prove herself. Horikita's retelling of their interactions amused Kiyotaka, though he couldn't help but wonder if some parts of it were exaggerated. Nevertheless, Kiyotaka found himself intrigued by the unexpected turn of events, albeit with a hint of apprehension about what awaited them in Ibuki's homemade lunchbox.
Despite Kiyotaka's initial attempts to escape the situation, Kushida insisted he stay, citing the opportunity to eat homemade food from someone classified as a girl. Kiyotaka expressed his resentment toward Horikita for orchestrating the situation, but she defended herself, claiming she wanted to share Ibuki's cooking with others. As they waited for Ibuki, Kushida revealed her own motives for participating, admitting that she wanted to witness Ibuki fail. When Ibuki arrived, she seemed confident about her cooking skills, despite the skepticism from the others. Ibuki presented her homemade lunchbox, wrapped in a simple furoshiki, and challenged them to eat it.
Despite Ibuki's confidence, the others remained skeptical, and Horikita warned Ibuki about the importance of handling her food delicately, even if it turned out well. Ibuki urged them to eat quickly and then apologize to her if they enjoyed it. The tension between the group was palpable, but Ibuki's confidence and Horikita's calm demeanor hinted at an unexpected closeness among them, despite their differences.
As the group examined Ibuki's homemade lunchbox, they found it surprisingly aesthetically pleasing, with a variety of dishes neatly arranged inside. Despite their skepticism about the taste, they acknowledged Ibuki's effort in the presentation. Horikita, prepared with disposable chopsticks, took the first bite, followed by Kushida, who reluctantly tasted the food. Their reactions remained ambiguous, with Horikita withholding her judgment to avoid influencing the others.
Kushida, exhibiting her usual facade of sweetness, seemed uncharacteristically unenthusiastic about tasting the food, displaying subtle signs of frustration. After reluctantly trying a few items, she passed the "baton of gross food" to Kiyotaka, implying that it was his turn to taste. Despite the tension and skepticism surrounding Ibuki's cooking, the group proceeded with caution, each member cautiously evaluating the taste of the homemade lunchbox. As Kiyotaka approached the remaining items in the lunchbox, he deliberated on which to taste, ultimately selecting the rolled tamagoyaki and a fried croquette. While the tamagoyaki was passable, the croquette fell short, exhibiting a mushy texture and poor seasoning.
Upon finishing the meal, Kiyotaka offered his honest opinion, stating that while it wasn't inedible, it lacked proper seasoning and exhibited inconsistencies in texture and flavor. Horikita concurred, providing a detailed critique of the meal's shortcomings, much to Ibuki's dismay. Ibuki, frustrated by the harsh criticism, reluctantly tasted her own cooking, initially attempting to deny its lack of flavor before begrudgingly admitting its flaws. Despite her protests, the judges remained firm in their assessment, with Horikita even suggesting a score of 20 out of 100 for the meal's quality. Ibuki, disappointed by the low score and unable to accept the judges' feedback, voiced her frustration, expressing disbelief at their assessment and accusing them of bias. However, the judges remained steadfast in their evaluation, unswayed by Ibuki's protests.
Horikita attempted to clean up the scattered lunch set left behind by Ibuki, expressing annoyance at her lack of responsibility. Despite the situation, Kushida stood up and announced her intention to join Horikita at seven o'clock, expressing a desire to save private points and enjoy a meal paid for by Horikita. Kiyotaka intervened, questioning why he was treated to lunch just for tasting a bad bento. Horikita offered him the remaining portion of the bento, but he declined, insisting it was just a joke and suggesting they go to the cafeteria instead, where he would treat her to whatever she liked. Reluctantly, Horikita agreed to his proposal, showing some semblance of conscience in her response.
As they walked, Kiyotaka reflected on the gathering they had just experienced with Horikita, Kushida, and Ibuki. Despite the tension and occasional friction, he sensed an underlying camaraderie, albeit unconventional. He pondered over the dynamics of their relationship, noting that while they might deny it, there seemed to be a budding friendship among them. However, when Kiyotaka mentioned treating Horikita to food, she responded with defiance, suggesting she wanted the most expensive option available. Despite her resistance, Kiyotaka insisted that she should eat whatever she desired, but ultimately, he found himself tasked with deciding on a set meal for them to share.
As the evening progressed and Kei returned home, Kiyotaka found himself in a moment of quiet reflection. With the television blaring in the background, he observed a variety show briefly before losing interest and turning it off. Despite Kei's fondness for TV, Kiyotaka realized he wasn't particularly drawn to such programs, preferring a different form of pastime. Turning his attention to a sketchbook and colored pencils he had purchased but rarely used, Kiyotaka contemplated what to draw. However, he found himself at a loss, lacking the inspiration to begin. Despite his proficiency in sketching, the act of creating something from his own imagination eluded him.
Reflecting on his experiences in the White Room, Kiyotaka acknowledged that while he had learned various skills, the ability to think creatively and independently was not explicitly taught. Faced with the blank pages of the sketchbook, he ultimately decided to put away the materials for another day. As he concluded his evening routine, Kiyotaka mused on the passing of time and the rapid progression of the school term, wondering what the future held as he prepared for the challenges ahead.
Chapter 2
In the latest school announcement, Chabashira-sensei unveiled the details of the upcoming special exam exclusively for second-year students, titled "Survival and Elimination." The name itself sparked a sense of apprehension among the students, hinting at potential expulsion. With only second-year students involved, the exam introduced a unique format. Each class would select a category and difficulty level, issuing tasks to other classes in a predetermined sequence. This strategic setup emphasized the importance of decision-making and cooperation within the class.
As Chabashira-sensei elaborated on the rules and procedures, the students grasped the gravity of the upcoming challenge. The atmosphere in the classroom shifted to one of seriousness as they realized the impact of their performance on their class's standing and their own future at the school. With the stage set for the first special exam of the term, the students braced themselves for the trials ahead, aware of the need for careful planning and execution to navigate through the tasks and emerge victorious.
In the upcoming "Survival and Elimination" special exam, Chabashira-sensei outlined a complex system where each second-year class would engage in offensive and defensive tasks with other classes. Using a diagram as an example, she explained the rotation of tasks between classes, with one class attacking while the other defends, then switching roles in subsequent turns.
Points would be earned by successfully completing tasks while defending, rather than by initiating attacks. The first half of the exam would consist of 10 turns in one direction, followed by another 10 turns in the opposite direction for a total of 20 turns. The arrangement of classes would be crucial, as offensive and defensive actions would not be conducted against diagonal classes, adding an extra layer of strategic planning and mental burden for the students.
In preparation for the upcoming special exam, Chabashira-sensei explained the diverse categories of tasks that would be involved. These ranged from fundamental academic subjects like literature and mathematics to non-academic areas such as subculture and entertainment. While some students, like Sudō, expressed reluctance towards unfamiliar subjects like entertainment, Chabashira-sensei emphasized the importance of broad general knowledge in navigating society. She likened the exam to a quiz, where the attacking class presents questions and the defending class solves them.
In the offensive phase of the special exam, the attacking class must select a category and difficulty level for their tasks. They then nominate a student to carry out the attack. There is a limit to how many times the same student can be nominated consecutively, and the attacking class must nominate five students from the defending class within three minutes. With 16 categories to choose from, including literature, history, science, and entertainment, the attacking class has a wide range of options. Difficulty levels range from one to three, with higher levels requiring the expenditure of earned points. The defense phase allows the defending class to protect up to five students per task, selecting them within three minutes after the attacking side finishes. Each student can exclude up to three categories, and three incorrect answers lead to elimination, with one point deducted per elimination. Correct answers earn one point each. Both sides can discuss strategies, but final decisions rest with the class leader, who bears significant responsibility on whether to follow the class views.
In the "Survival and Elimination" special exam, each class competes to accumulate points while avoiding elimination. The rewards and penalties for each class are as follows:
- 1st place: 100 Class points
- 2nd place: 50 Class points
- 3rd place: -50 Class points
- 4th place: -100 Class points
Additionally, if all four classes finish with the same score, each class will incur a deduction of 100 Class points. An extension of the game will be conducted if a few classes had the same points. This was a rare chance to expel a specific student while also damaging the rival classes.
One plausible avenue for cooperation emerges in the form of an agreement not to eliminate each other, which could offer a degree of safety for participating classes. However, securing consensus on such a proposal may prove challenging, particularly among leaders like Ryūen or Sakayanagi, who may prioritize their own interests over collective safety. The rules governing the exam introduce mechanisms to address potential scenarios of multiple eliminations within the lowest-ranked class. In such cases, expulsion becomes inevitable for at least one student, barring exceptional circumstances such as holding Protection Points or payment of 20 million points.
Horikita seeks clarification on procedural aspects of the exam, raising questions about the fate of leaders who may be eliminated midway through the process and the status of expelled students. Chabashira-sensei provides reassurance that while eliminated students lose their eligibility to be nominated by attackers, they are permitted to remain in the room and participate in ongoing discussions, mitigating some of the potential social and logistical challenges associated with expulsion.
After Chabashira-sensei concluded her explanation and left the classroom, the students found themselves in a contemplative mood. With the impending special exam weighing heavily on their minds, they gathered around Horikita, seeking clarity amidst the uncertainty. Yōsuke took the initiative to steer the conversation towards a recap of the exam's main points, emphasizing the dire consequences of finishing last, including the possibility of expulsion for classmates. The realization that multiple expulsions could occur in the event of a tie for last place added to the gravity of the situation.
The finite number of attacks, totaling 20 rounds with 5 students targeted each time, underscored the inevitability of eliminations. Yōsuke cautioned against the dangers of attempting to protect specific students, as it could inadvertently lead to more eliminations. Instead, he stressed the importance of strategic analysis and prediction, both for the offensive and defensive sides. The need to identify weaknesses in opposing classes and anticipate their moves was paramount to success.
Horikita echoed Yōsuke's sentiments, urging her classmates to maintain composure amidst the mounting pressure. While the threat of elimination loomed large, she emphasized the importance of unified awareness and strategic planning. Recognizing the potential for anxiety to spiral out of control, she called for a lunchtime meeting to further discuss strategies and alleviate concerns. Participation was encouraged, highlighting the collective effort required to navigate the challenges ahead.
As the lunch break commenced, students without meals hurriedly dashed to the cafeteria or nearby convenience stores before returning to the classroom. Approximately 10 minutes into the break, 37 classmates, excluding Kōenji, had assembled in the classroom with a singular purpose: to strategize for the impending special exam. The plan was to combine eating with discussion to maximize their use of time. Among the crucial topics slated for discussion, understanding the intricacies of the special exam and selecting a suitable leader took precedence.
While Horikita was widely seen as the de facto leader due to her previous efforts, she refrained from asserting herself at the onset of the discussion. Instead, she opted to gauge her classmates' opinions first, demonstrating her willingness to listen and consider alternative candidates. Nevertheless, it was evident that many students viewed Horikita as a natural choice for leadership, given her track record of reliability.
Yōsuke, taking the initiative, posed a direct question to Horikita regarding her willingness to accept the role of leader for the special exam. His inquiry aimed to preempt any potential hesitation or uncertainty, ensuring a smoother nomination process. Despite potential reservations stemming from past incidents, Yōsuke remained steadfast in his support for Horikita, highlighting her capacity to lead effectively. In response, Horikita acknowledged the weight of leadership responsibilities while expressing openness to the possibility of nomination. However, she emphasized the importance of considering other potential candidates and their ideas, underscoring her commitment to prudent decision-making. Aware of the privilege afforded to the leader in terms of immunity from expulsion, Horikita sought to foster a collaborative approach to leadership selection.
Horikita, positioned at the front of the classroom where she could address everyone, posed a direct query: "Is there anyone here who wants to be the leader?" The room fell silent as students exchanged uncertain glances, each waiting for someone to step forward. After a brief pause, Yōsuke acknowledged the prevailing sentiment, expressing his preference for Horikita to assume the leadership role given the lack of alternative candidates. Recognizing the importance of selecting a leader promptly, Yōsuke sought to expedite the decision-making process.
Despite initially appearing reserved, Horikita affirmed her intention to assume the leadership position, citing her underlying commitment to the role. However, before the decision could be finalized, Maezono interjected, signaling a desire for further discussion. Yōsuke, while maintaining his usual composure, recognized the gravity of the situation, mindful of the potential consequences of the upcoming special exam. Maezono's query challenged the assumption that Horikita was the unequivocal choice for leadership, prompting Yōsuke to reassess the decision-making criteria. While Yōsuke expressed unwavering confidence in Horikita's capabilities, Maezono's question resonated with the class, sparking a moment of introspection. The atmosphere grew tense as Maezono's inquiry injected a note of uncertainty into the proceedings, prompting Yōsuke to grapple with a response that balanced diplomacy with conviction.
During the discussion about leadership, Ike, typically not known for deep contemplation, unexpectedly interjected, questioning Maezono's assertion. Despite the interruption, Maezono persisted, indicating that she indeed had someone in mind and sought permission to voice her opinion. She proceeded to express doubts about Horikita's decisiveness, referencing the unanimous vote special exam where Horikita appeared to waver in her decision-making amid Kushida's potential expulsion.
Maezono's critique was careful not to implicate Kushida unjustly, emphasizing that her concerns were not based on personal animosity. Nevertheless, her remarks seemed to ruffle some feathers, particularly considering Kushida's recent attempts to maintain a friendly facade. Maezono's underlying skepticism about Horikita's suitability for leadership stemmed from doubts about her ability to make tough decisions consistently.
Horikita, acknowledging the validity of Maezono's concerns, admitted her past hesitations and acknowledged her own imperfections. However, she defended her candidacy, noting the absence of alternative volunteers for the leadership role. Hasebe, though visibly affected by Horikita's admission, refrained from reproach, likely understanding the complexities of the decision-making process. As the debate continued, Horikita remained resolute, challenging Maezono's critique and questioning whether any viable alternatives had emerged. She highlighted the lack of nominations for leadership and proposed considering Kōenji, the only student not engaged in the discussion, as a potential candidate.
Kōenji's formidable individuality was undeniable, capable of tackling any challenge thrown his way. Maezono briefly appeared flustered by Horikita's response but struggled to formulate a counterargument. In a bid to resolve the impasse, Maezono proposed a class-wide search for a leader with stronger decision-making skills, echoing Horikita's sentiments. She called for candidates confident in guiding the class to victory to step forward, implicitly referencing Kōenji, who remained steadfastly unmoved.
While Horikita refrained from directly nominating herself, her suggestion hinted at the need for someone with robust leadership qualities. Maezono, conceding to the persuasive argument, retracted her stance, restoring a semblance of harmony to the discussion. Her remarks, though challenged, served a crucial purpose in ensuring the fairness of the leadership selection process and preventing bias toward Horikita. The class gradually resumed their lunchtime activities, with Horikita and Yōsuke taking charge of elucidating the details and rules of the special exam. Amidst the exchange, Horikita and Yōsuke seamlessly balanced their explanations with their meals, ensuring that every student comprehensively understood the upcoming challenge.
Sudō raised a pressing issue regarding Kōenji's absence. Recalling the promise made to protect Kōenji from expulsion, Sudō emphasized the need to honor their commitment, prompting Horikita to confirm the agreement made before the deserted island exam. It was a well-known fact among the classmates that Kōenji enjoyed unconditional protection due to this pact, which posed a unique challenge in the upcoming special exam.Horikita revealed that she had recently received a polite email from Kōenji, reminding the class of their promise to safeguard him from expulsion.
This elicited frustration from some students, as it meant allocating four protected slots instead of the usual five. While protecting Kōenji would likely deter attackers, it didn't guarantee his immunity from potential challenges. Horikita reassured the class that they would devise countermeasures to address this issue, albeit without delving into specifics during the current discussion. Recognizing the sensitive nature of their strategic deliberations, Horikita cautioned against discussing them openly, mindful of the risk of information leakage. She stressed the importance of conducting such discussions discreetly, avoiding public spaces like classrooms and corridors where conversations could be overheard, and refraining from exchanging ideas via easily traceable mediums like cell phones.
As the school day ended, Kei and Kiyotaka made an unexpected stop at Keyaki Mall. Despite her usual cheerful demeanor, Kei seemed troubled, prompting Kiyotaka to inquire about her state of mind. She expressed concerns about the impending exam and her vulnerability to being targeted, seeking reassurance regarding her safety. Understanding her fears, Kiyotaka assured Kei that she wasn't alone in feeling anxious, and that Horikita, as the class leader, would prioritize the protection of all classmates. Kei suggested that Kiyotaka's leadership might offer her greater security, but he explained that Horikita's decisions would be based on various factors, including Kei's status as his girlfriend.
Kiyotaka emphasized that while being his girlfriend might provide some level of protection, it wouldn't guarantee immunity from elimination. He reassured Kei that Horikita would consider multiple factors in her decision-making process, and that she wouldn't be singled out as an easy target without considering other eliminations and class dynamics. Kiyotaka highlighted the limited scope of protection available in each round of eliminations, suggesting that Kei's chances of being singled out were low given the large number of classmates and potential eliminations. Their conversation served to alleviate Kei's worries to some extent, helping her understand her value within the class context.
On their way back from Keyaki Mall, Kiyotaka and Kei encountered Morishita, who was inexplicably lying down on a bench. Kei expressed surprise at Morishita's unusual behavior, questioning whether she was alright. Despite the cold weather, Morishita assured them that she was not dead, albeit appearing drowsy. Morishita explained that she had been waiting for Kiyotaka, catching both him and Kei off guard. Kei was curious about their connection, prompting Morishita to clarify that they were not acquaintances and had only spoken once before. Kei, however, teased Kiyotaka about his interactions with girls from other classes, adopting a playful yet probing attitude.
Kiyotaka felt slightly bothered by Morishita's casual manner of addressing him without honorifics, but he didn't dwell on it. When Kei jokingly questioned his interactions with other girls, Kiyotaka dismissed it, stating that it didn't matter who initiated the conversation. Despite Kei's playful interrogation, Kiyotaka remained composed, recognizing her teasing for what it was.
Morishita's probing questions seemed to unsettle Kei, who struggled to find an adequate response. Despite Kei's attempt to defend herself, Morishita continued to question her choice of dating Yōsuke, highlighting his exceptional qualities and suggesting that Kei didn't match his standards. Kiyotaka observed the interaction between Morishita and Kei, noting the tension building between them. He couldn't help but notice Morishita's unconventional approach to questioning, which bordered on rudeness. Despite the discomfort, Kiyotaka remained calm, analyzing the situation.
Kiyotaka understood the underlying tension but refrained from intervening, allowing Kei to handle the situation herself. As Morishita continued to press Kei, Kiyotaka observed silently, contemplating Morishita's motives behind her probing questions. He recognized the complexity of the situation and the potential for it to escalate further. Yet, he remained composed, waiting to see how Kei would navigate the confrontation.
Kei and Kiyotaka encountered Morishita unexpectedly during their walk back from Keyaki Mall, finding her lying on a bench in a peculiar manner. Morishita's presence, coupled with her odd behavior, sparked Kei's curiosity and led to a conversation where Morishita questioned Kei's relationship with Hirata Yōsuke in a blunt and unconventional manner.
Morishita's probing questions aimed to dissect Kei's personality and motives for dating Yōsuke, leaving Kei feeling uneasy and defensive. Despite Kiyotaka's inclination to intervene, he allowed Kei to handle the situation herself while silently observing the interaction. Morishita's assessment of Kei as a "casual woman" and her critique of Kei's appearance struck a nerve, prompting Kiyotaka to contemplate Morishita's intentions behind her probing questions. As the conversation escalated, he stepped in to defend Kei and diffuse the tension, prompting Morishita to apologize for her earlier remarks.
Despite the apology, Morishita's peculiar behavior persisted, leaving Kei and Kiyotaka feeling unsettled. As Morishita prepared to leave, Kiyotaka inquired about her unique status in Sakayanagi's class, prompting her to explain her approach to maintaining a low profile and avoiding unnecessary attention. Morishita's explanation shed light on the dynamics of Class A and highlighted the contrast between her passive approach and Kiyotaka's proactive stance. Reflecting on Morishita's situation, he recognized the significance of his own actions in attracting attention and disrupting the status quo within the class hierarchy.
Morishita's unexpected invitation to continue their conversation caught Kei and Kiyotaka off guard, prompting them to reluctantly agree to accompany her back to the dorms. Despite Kei's protestations, Morishita persisted, emphasizing the value of future interactions and suggesting exchanging contact information.
While Kei was initially hesitant, Kiyotaka saw the practicality of exchanging contact information and agreed. However, he couldn't help but notice that Morishita had very few contacts on her chat app, indicating a solitary lifestyle devoid of many friendships. This observation added another layer to Morishita's enigmatic persona, leaving Kiyotaka intrigued by her quiet demeanor and her sudden interest in establishing connections with them.
Chapter 3
Mii-chan approached Kiyotaka, seeking his help regarding a matter that had been troubling her since she was absent from school due to her feelings for Hirata. During her absence, someone had been discreetly delivering food to her, and she wanted to express her gratitude by finding out who it was. Kiyotaka recalled the situation from late September when he was asked if he was the one delivering the meals. Although some time had passed, Mii-chan still wanted to uncover the identity of her benefactor.
She explained that there were two clues: a note in a bag of groceries containing only the room number and a list of items purchased from the convenience store. While the note was deliberately written to conceal the writer's identity, Mii-chan hoped to identify the person through the items purchased. Kiyotaka recognized the cunning nature of the person behind the gifts and suggested that they quickly visit the convenience store to inquire about recent purchases. With limited time before the store clerks' memories faded, Kiyotaka and Mii-chan decided to act swiftly. This method was a common tactic to uncover the identity of a gift-giver, but timing was crucial to ensure success. As they made their way to the convenience store, Kiyotaka remained focused on assisting Mii-chan, understanding the importance of resolving this matter for her peace of mind.
Mii-chan surprised Kiyotaka by revealing that she had already attempted to inquire about the gift-giver at the convenience store upon her return to school. However, she faced setbacks as the clerk she spoke to was newly assigned and the manager had been transferred. Despite also asking the girls on her floor, Mii-chan hit a dead end and decided to give up for a while. Time passed without any progress until she unexpectedly received information from a clerk at a convenience store she visited recently.
The clerk, who had met the transferred shift leader, remembered Mii-chan's concern and attempted to share the name of a relevant student mentioned by the manager before the transfer. However, Mii-chan was caught off guard and ran away before she could hear the details, feeling nervous and overwhelmed by the situation. She admitted to running away for quite a while, feeling embarrassed and unsure of how to proceed.
Mii-chan expressed her apprehension about discovering the identity of the gift-giver, fearing that acknowledging it would eliminate her ability to feign ignorance and possibly disrupt the giver's desire for anonymity. Despite her desire to express gratitude, she believed there was nothing she could do without knowing their identity. Kiyotaka understood Mii-chan's dilemma and recognized that the gift-giver may have valid reasons for remaining anonymous. Mii-chan expressed her confusion about whether to uncover the identity of the gift-giver and express her gratitude. She considered the possibility that the giver might be a classmate but struggled to identify anyone close enough to her who would hide their act of kindness. Kiyotaka suggested that the giver could be someone outside her immediate circle, even a boy who secretly liked her. This revelation startled Mii-chan, causing her to become flustered and draw attention.
Encouraging her to focus on making a decision, Kiyotaka emphasized the importance of weighing the consequences of knowing the giver's identity and whether it would alter their relationship. When asked for his opinion, Kiyotaka admitted that he would want to know the identity but might hesitate to approach them depending on the circumstances. He cautioned Mii-chan about the potential difficulties of maintaining secrecy and the emotional impact of learning the truth. Despite feeling guilty for not expressing gratitude, Mii-chan was reminded of the emotional turmoil involved in uncovering the truth. Kiyotaka reassured her that it was okay to give up and highlighted the positive aspect of choosing not to learn the giver's identity. He emphasized the transformative power of knowledge and the potential impact on their relationship, urging Mii-chan to consider her emotional well-being before making a decision.
Mii-chan expressed her desire to uncover the identity of the gift-giver despite the potential for regret. Kiyotaka offered to accompany her to the convenience store, providing support and reassurance. When they arrived, Mii-chan hesitated, waiting until the store was empty to avoid any potential embarrassment. Inside, they were greeted by a friendly employee who recognized Kiyotaka and assumed he was Mii-chan's boyfriend. This misunderstanding led to an awkward exchange, with Mii-chan vehemently denying any romantic involvement between them. Despite the confusion, they proceeded with their mission to uncover the truth about the gift-giver.
After learning that Kōenji was the one who had been anonymously supporting her, Mii-chan was left in disbelief. Kiyotaka tried to rationalize the situation, suggesting that perhaps Mii-chan could ignore Kōenji's gesture and not thank him, given his unpredictable nature. However, Mii-chan felt it was necessary to express her gratitude, considering Kōenji's status as their classmate and the significant expense he had incurred. Despite the unexpectedness of the situation, Mii-chan was determined to find a way to properly thank Kōenji for his generosity.
Despite feeling uncertain about accompanying Mii-chan to thank Kōenji, Kiyotaka agreed to support her. They decided to visit Kōenji's place early the next day, as Mii-chan was eager to resolve the situation and express her gratitude. Although Kiyotaka had his own plans for the morning, he prioritized Mii-chan's request and adjusted his schedule accordingly. As they parted ways for the day, Mii-chan expressed her heartfelt thanks to Kiyotaka for his support, emphasizing her gratitude for his willingness to help her in this situation.
As they made their way to Keyaki Mall, the weight of Mii-chan's emotional turmoil seemed palpable. Despite her typically composed demeanor, she appeared visibly shaken by the turn of events. Kiyotaka couldn't help but feel a sense of responsibility for inadvertently leading her to this moment of distress. However, he remained steadfast in his determination to assist her in resolving the situation.
As they walked, Kiyotaka's mind raced with thoughts about Mii-chan's predicament. He considered her character - studious, reserved, yet surprisingly fragile when faced with unexpected challenges. It was a common enough archetype among high school students, yet there was something uniquely compelling about Mii-chan's plight. The connection between Mii-chan and Kōenji added an intriguing layer to the situation. Despite their limited interaction, there seemed to be an underlying complexity to their relationship. Kiyotaka couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to it than met the eye.
Kōenji himself was an enigma. His ostentatious confidence and charismatic persona made him a figure of fascination within the school. Yet, beneath the veneer of bravado, there lurked an inscrutable depth that defied easy analysis. Kiyotaka had observed Kōenji enough to know that attempting to decipher his intentions was an exercise in futility. Nevertheless, Kiyotaka remained committed to helping Mii-chan navigate this uncertain territory. He understood that the only way to unravel the mystery was to confront Kōenji directly. As they approached the gym, Kiyotaka resolved to approach the situation with caution and diplomacy, knowing that the outcome could have far-reaching implications for both Mii-chan and Kōenji.
As Kiyotaka observed Mii-chan's trembling hands and nervous glances, he couldn't help but empathize with her apprehension. They had ventured to Keyaki Mall together, with the intention of confronting Kōenji regarding the anonymous gifts he had sent to Mii-chan during her absence from school. Sitting on a bench near the gym entrance, they waited anxiously for Kōenji to emerge. Kiyotaka noted Mii-chan's unease as the minutes ticked by, her anticipation palpable. After nearly 40 minutes of anticipation, Kōenji finally emerged from the gym, his presence commanding attention. Kiyotaka subtly signaled to Mii-chan, prompting her to approach Kōenji with the carefully chosen gift in hand. As Mii-chan nervously presented the gift to Kōenji, Kiyotaka observed the exchange closely, curious to see Kōenji's reaction.
As Kiyotaka and Mii-chan observed Kōenji leaving the gym, it was evident that he noticed them, yet he remained indifferent, passing by without a word. Despite this, they remained resolute in their mission to confront him and uncover the truth behind his mysterious actions. Mii-chan, undeterred by Kōenji's initial dismissal, summoned her courage and called out to him, requesting a moment of his time. Kōenji, using a unique nickname for Mii-chan, declined her request, laughing off the encounter and walking away, leaving Mii-chan visibly flustered.
Facing this setback, Mii-chan was hesitant to approach Kōenji again, prompting Kiyotaka to suggest tailing him discreetly. Despite the potential inconvenience, they decided to follow Kōenji, with Kiyotaka taking the lead in their stealthy pursuit. As they trailed Kōenji through the mall, Kiyotaka reassured Mii-chan that losing sight of him was not a concern. With determination and caution, they continued their observation, intent on discovering the truth behind Kōenji's actions.
After Kōenji's encounter with Mii-chan and him, Kiyotaka decided to discreetly tail Kōenji as he headed towards the café area of the mall. Despite the possibility of Kōenji noticing him, he deemed it necessary to continue his observation. As Kōenji engaged in conversation with another student, Enoshima Midoriko, Mii-chan expressed a desire to eavesdrop, hoping to uncover any clues about his intentions. Reluctantly, he agreed to continue tailing Kōenji, albeit with reservations about the usefulness of such an endeavor.
Kiyotaka strategically exited the mall through a side door and circled around to re-enter from the opposite side, aiming to remain inconspicuous. However, upon his return to the café area, Kōenji was gone, leaving only Enoshima behind. Just as he began to think his chance to confront Kōenji had passed, Kōenji unexpectedly reappeared, seemingly unperturbed by his pursuit. Mii-chan wasted no time in confronting him about the mysterious gifts left at her doorstep during her absence.
To his surprise, Kōenji readily admitted to being the one behind the gifts, attributing his actions to a sense of obligation to help those in need. Despite his confident demeanor, Mii-chan was left speechless, struggling to comprehend his straightforward explanation. In the end, while Kōenji's actions remained enigmatic, it became clear that his motives were not driven by romantic interest in Mii-chan. After Kōenji rebuffed Mii-chan's attempt to thank him for his past assistance, citing his actions as stemming from goodwill rather than obligation, Mii-chan, perplexed by his cryptic explanation, offered a thank-you gift, which he declined. Despite Kōenji's reputation as a spendthrift, he refused any form of repayment, leaving doubts about his intentions. Mii-chan persisted in her quest for clarity, but Kōenji dismissed her inquiries as trivial, refusing to provide further explanation. Sensing the unresolved tension, Kiyotaka stepped in, expressing a desire to speak with Kōenji privately, hoping to uncover the truth behind his actions.
In a tense exchange, Kiyotaka confronted Kōenji about the nature of cooperation in the class, prompting Kōenji to assert that genuine goodwill cannot be coerced and that he would not be swayed by any attempts to oblige him. Despite Kiyotaka's efforts to leverage Kōenji's vulnerability in the upcoming special exam, Kōenji remained steadfast in his self-reliance, dismissing any attempts to manipulate him. As Kiyotaka contemplated the possibility of excluding Kōenji from the class's plans, Kōenji issued a veiled warning, suggesting consequences for any attempts to marginalize him. Though Kiyotaka maintained a stoic demeanor, Kōenji's cryptic remarks left an impression, prompting a reflective moment on the complexity of their interactions. Mii-chan interjected with a sense of concern, prompting Kiyotaka to apologize for his somewhat forceful approach. Despite her apprehension about Kiyotaka's tactics, Mii-chan seemed to understand the necessity of the conversation, albeit with a hint of unease. As Kiyotaka reassured her, Mii-chan appeared to accept his explanation, though her lingering worry hinted at a deeper unease about the dynamics within the class.
Chapter 4
Having deduced Mii-chan's benefactor over the weekend, the week progressed without Horikita seeking Kiyotaka's counsel. However, on a Wednesday afternoon, Ike burst into class with an unexpected winning strategy proposal, met with skepticism from his classmates. Despite the diminishing audience, Ike persisted, eventually revealing his plan to Horikita and a select few, including Kiyotaka. They adjourned to their usual meeting spot at Keyaki Mall's karaoke, where Kiyotaka's curiosity led him to join the discussion. Amidst playful banter and Ike's one-drink policy revelation, Kiyotaka observed the trends in music, revealing his order of plum kelp tea as they awaited their refreshments.
It was crucial to avoid interruptions during their discussion, so they convened at the karaoke spot. As drinks arrived, Ike enthusiastically presented his winning strategy, suggesting that feigning illness among 32 students could secure exactly 68 points. While some dismissed it as too risky or suspicious, Horikita recognized its potential for securing a high average score without requiring extensive preparation. Despite skepticism, the plan offered unique advantages: it didn't rely on skills or luck, could be implemented last-minute, and provided a fail-safe for expulsion. Though unconventional, it promised a guaranteed outcome in the absence of obstruction from other classes.
The discussion over Ike's intriguing strategy unfolded with Horikita expressing reservations due to a certain rule complicating its implementation. While Ike remained confident in its viability, Horikita envisioned significant hurdles. She elaborated on potential counterstrategies, highlighting how the plan's conspicuousness and susceptibility to opponent coordination could lead to failure. Horikita proposed an alternative approach leveraging cooperation among classes to undermine the strategy's effectiveness. By exploiting the exam's rules and utilizing communication tools, they could strategically thwart opponents and secure victory. Despite Ike's initial excitement, he ultimately grasped the flaws in his plan and acknowledged the superiority of relying on their own abilities. Horikita recognized the valuable lesson learned from the discussion, emphasizing the importance of anticipating collective opposition and the need for strategic flexibility. In the high-stakes competition ahead, the main point to remind themselves was that only one class could emerge victorious.
After the discussion concluded, Horikita commended Ike for his bravery in presenting his idea, fostering an atmosphere of open dialogue. Encouraged by Horikita's inclusive approach, Ike and others were urged to share their thoughts without fear of judgment. Despite the imperfections of Ike's strategy, the constructive criticism exchanged during the discussion held valuable purpose, deepening everyone's understanding. As the others left the karaoke room, Horikita revealed her plan to return home, having allocated time even on her day off for the gathering. Reflecting on the quality of the drinks, the affordability and speed of consumption were deemed advantageous. In a surprising turn, I proposed a one-on-one discussion with Horikita about the upcoming special exam, prompting her surprise. Despite her initial skepticism, she agreed, and we decided to continue our conversation over coffee, leaving the karaoke box together.
After arriving at the café and ordering coffee, Kiyotaka seized the opportunity to have a private discussion with Horikita, opting for a more personal approach. While she initially appeared restless, unsure of Kiyotaka's intentions, he aimed to empower her for the upcoming special exam. He entrusted her with a new strength, recognizing her growth, maturity, and the relationships she had formed within the class. As they enjoyed their coffee, Kiyotaka subtly probed into her mindset, seeking to understand her approach to the exam and how it differed from previous challenges. Reflecting on her past experiences, he emphasized the significance of her internal changes and the necessity for a strategic mindset in facing the impending hurdles posed by the exam's expulsion dynamics. Despite their lighthearted banter, their conversation delved into deeper territory, focusing on her personal growth and readiness for the challenges ahead.
Horikita seemed to hesitate for a moment, her expression betraying a hint of uncertainty. It wasn't surprising; discussing the possibility of coming in last and having to expel a classmate was undoubtedly a weighty topic. However, she gathered herself and responded with a determined tone, expressing her readiness to face whatever decision awaited her. It was evident that she had contemplated this scenario thoroughly and had already established criteria for making such a choice. Despite the gravity of the situation, she remained steadfast in her commitment to lead the class responsibly.
Kiyotaka acknowledged her preparation and assured her that there was no shame in considering all possible outcomes, even if it meant contemplating defeat. He emphasized that her concern for the class's well-being was commendable and underscored the importance of being prepared for any eventuality. Horikita's willingness to confront difficult decisions demonstrated her dedication as a leader, a quality that Kiyotaka respected.
As their conversation delved deeper, Kiyotaka reminded Horikita that the responsibility of choosing who to expel ultimately rested with her. He emphasized the gravity of this decision and underscored the need for her to make it with the class's best interests in mind. Horikita's humility and gratitude for Kiyotaka's guidance were palpable, reflecting her trust in his judgment and their collaborative dynamic. He stressed the importance of learning from past failures and striving for improvement. He encouraged Horikita to approach the special exam with determination and resilience, knowing that their class's success depended on their ability to navigate challenges effectively.
Horikita sat with a slightly cooled cup of coffee, contemplating Kiyotaka's probing questions. His inquiries, though seemingly hypothetical, struck at the heart of leadership and moral responsibility. As Kiyotaka presented various scenarios, Horikita's initial confidence wavered, revealing a vulnerability she seldom showed. The prospect of having to choose between victory and the expulsion of a classmate, particularly someone like Ibuki Mio, whom she had grown close to, rattled her composure.
Despite her attempts to maintain a composed facade, Kiyotaka could sense her inner turmoil. Horikita's struggle to reconcile her desire for victory with the potential cost of sacrificing a friend highlighted the ethical dilemmas inherent in their situation. Kiyotaka's insistence on exploring these uncomfortable truths forced Horikita to confront her own biases and limitations as a leader.
As the discussion progressed, Horikita's initial defensiveness gave way to a reluctant acknowledgment of her oversight. She admitted that her focus had been primarily on her own class's survival and success, neglecting to consider the broader implications of their actions on others. Kiyotaka's pointed questions compelled her to confront the harsh realities of the special exam and the moral complexities it entailed. In the end, Horikita conceded that she had not adequately prepared for the moral dilemmas they might face in the exam.
Horikita's abrupt change in demeanor, from contemplative to flustered, caught Kiyotaka's attention. As she struggled to articulate her thoughts, Kiyotaka maintained his composed demeanor, patiently waiting for her to gather her thoughts. Horikita's admission of her inability to maintain awareness at the moment was met with understanding from Kiyotaka. He reassured her that simply being conscious of her actions was a significant first step towards growth.
Despite her self-deprecating remarks, Kiyotaka saw Horikita's potential for growth and development. He recognized her emerging awareness as a positive sign of progress, even if it was still in its early stages. As Horikita reflected on her own limitations, Kiyotaka remained a silent but supportive presence, offering guidance when needed.
When the conversation shifted to Kiyotaka himself, Horikita's curiosity about his past and personality became apparent. Despite his reluctance to share personal details, Kiyotaka deflected her inquiries with ease, maintaining a level of mystery that intrigued Horikita even further. As their conversation continued, Kiyotaka subtly guided the discussion back to Horikita's own growth and self-awareness, emphasizing the importance of understanding one's strengths and weaknesses in the context of their upcoming challenges/ Kiyotaka observed Horikita's fatigue and suggested she take a break to recharge. Their brief exchange, marked by a rare moment of shared humor as they both said their drink became cold at the same time. She was astonished when she saw Kiyotaka genuinely smile for the first time.
Kiyotaka listened attentively as Horikita raised the matter of finalizing their category exclusions for the upcoming special exam. It appeared that Horikita had already discussed this with their classmates, leaving only Kiyotaka's input to be confirmed. As Horikita outlined her choices—entertainment, music, and subculture—Kiyotaka acknowledged their relevance, considering his own proficiency and interests. He noted that these categories were unrelated to academic subjects, aligning with his own choices.
Horikita's reasoning behind her selections resonated with Kiyotaka. He recognized the importance of excluding categories in which they lacked proficiency, aiming to optimize their performance in the exam. While Kiyotaka admitted uncertainty regarding other categories, he trusted Horikita's judgment and agreed with her choices. With their decisions made, Kiyotaka assured Horikita that he would register her chosen categories.
Chapter 5
Hashimoto found himself experiencing a restless night before the special exam. Despite typically having no trouble falling asleep, anxiety about the upcoming challenges kept him awake. As he groggily checked his phone upon waking up, he noticed a message from Kitō regarding Sakayanagi's decision on a policy for the exam. Anticipating that the discussion among class leaders wouldn't reveal detailed strategies, Hashimoto recognized Sakayanagi's tendency to operate independently and share only essential information with her pawns.
Turning his attention to the numerous messages from his girlfriend, Hashimoto felt a sense of annoyance at the trivial nature of their conversations. He responded with a curt message, prioritizing his focus on gathering information related to the exam. Hashimoto acknowledged the pressing issue of determining their strategy for the special exam, particularly as the end-of-year exams approached. He was anxious at the prospect of facing Ryūen in a direct confrontation and potentially losing significant class points.
Hashimoto found himself at a casual tea party with Sakayanagi and other classmates, including Kamuro and Kitō. Despite assuming it was a strategy meeting for the special exam, Sakayanagi insisted it was just a gathering for public appeal. Hashimoto expressed confusion about the purpose, but Sakayanagi emphasized her desire to enjoy the upcoming battle and create tension among the other classes.
Observing Sakayanagi's priorities, Hashimoto reflected on her leadership style, which prioritized her own amusement over strategic advantages. He realized that if their class's success faltered, Sakayanagi's value as a leader would decline. After the tea party, Hashimoto retreated to a restroom stall, not for its intended purpose but out of habit. Finding solace in the quiet and cleanliness of the stall, Hashimoto used it as a place to calm his mind and return to his roots amidst the pressures of the school environment.
Hashimoto found himself spending about 30 minutes in the restroom stall without using his phone, contemplating his next move. When he finally decided to leave, he encountered Ryūen leaning against the wall outside the restroom. Ryūen teased Hashimoto about his extended bathroom break, but Hashimoto quickly grew irritated, questioning why Ryūen couldn't have contacted him through other means. Despite his annoyance, Hashimoto recognized the importance of discussing strategies with Ryūen to understand the inner workings of the opposing classes, even if it meant navigating rough waters.
Kiyotaka found himself spending the morning with Kei at Keyaki Mall, enjoying casual conversation before heading back to the dorm together. As they walked, Kiyotaka received a call from Kanzaki, who, along with Watanabe, wanted to meet up. Kei seemed curious but didn't press further, understanding the need for privacy. When they arrived at Kiyotaka's room, Kanzaki explained that Ichinose and Amikura would also join them. Despite the unexpected additions, Kiyotaka remained composed, ready to engage in whatever discussion lay ahead.
Ichinose and Amikura unexpectedly visit Kiyotaka, bringing snacks as a gift. They express a desire to discuss the upcoming special exam, specifically seeking Kiyotaka's input. However, before Ichinose can begin, Kanzaki interjects with concerns about potential collaboration between their classes. He worries about the consequences of such collaboration, particularly regarding class scores. Ichinose reassures Kanzaki that she isn't seeking Kiyotaka's agreement on collaboration but rather wishes to share her class's perspective. Despite initial tension, the conversation shifts to casual topics, facilitated by Watanabe's presence. As the evening progresses, the group decides to wrap up the gathering. After their departure, Kiyotaka is surprised when Ichinose returns alone, leaving him curious about her purpose.
Ichinose returns to retrieve her forgotten phone, igniting a tender exchange filled with unspoken longing. As she tentatively suggests locking the door for privacy, a surge of anticipation and hesitancy swirls between them. Ichinose's fleeting pause reflects a delicate dance of desire and caution, a silent plea for understanding.
In a vulnerable confession, she admits that her supposed forgetfulness was a deliberate ploy, a desperate bid to steal a precious moment alone with Kiyotaka. Her fear of being deemed repulsive for chasing affection amid his existing relationship hangs heavy in the air, painting her vulnerability in shades of doubt and longing. Yet, in the gentle reassurance of Kiyotaka's words, there's a glimmer of hope and understanding. His acknowledgment of her consideration sparks a flicker of warmth in the otherwise somber atmosphere, weaving a delicate tapestry of connection and empathy between them.
And as Ichinose bares her heart, laying bare her unspoken feelings with raw honesty, Kiyotaka's world shifts, recognizing the depth of her emotions and the tangled web of desire that binds them together. In her unwavering pursuit of love, he glimpses a newfound strength and resilience, igniting a quiet admiration for her unwavering generosity and unyielding spirit. Their shared moment transcends the boundaries of mere words, a silent symphony of emotions that resonates deep within their souls, weaving a tapestry of longing, desire, and understanding.
The unexpected intrusion shattered the fragile moment between Ichinose and Kiyotaka. As the door burst open, Watanabe's presence disrupted the intimate atmosphere, leaving them all reeling in shock and uncertainty. The tension in the room was palpable as Watanabe stumbled over his words, realizing his blunder in barging in unannounced. Caught off guard, Ichinose's swift response belied her inner turmoil, as she gracefully navigated the awkward encounter with poise and composure. Despite the disarray, she managed to maintain a facade of calm, inviting Watanabe in with a gentle yet firm resolve.
As the trio gathered in the cramped entrance area, the air hung heavy with unspoken tension and discomfort. Each moment felt like an eternity, with the weight of the unexpected intrusion casting a shadow over their interactions. Yet, amidst the chaos, Ichinose's ability to remain composed and decisive was a testament to her strength and resilience. Despite the upheaval, she skillfully steered the situation towards resolution, ensuring that they could address the intrusion with dignity and grace. As they settled into an uneasy silence, the room seemed to echo with the weight of unspoken words and lingering tension. Despite the disruption, Ichinose's quiet resolve offered a glimmer of hope, reminding them all of her unwavering determination to navigate through any obstacle that came their way.
With poise and grace, Ichinose swiftly took control, offering a composed explanation to Watanabe and gently guiding him towards understanding and forgiveness, saying it was her those chose to do what he saw. Despite the initial panic, Watanabe's demeanor shifted from anxiety to a calm resolve, as he bravely opened up about his own past struggles with love and heartbreak. His story unfolded with raw emotion, revealing the complexities of unrequited affection and the pain of lost connections.
Through Watanabe's narrative, a tapestry of emotions emerged – from the innocence of youthful infatuation to the bitterness of betrayal and the resilience of the human spirit. His vulnerability laid bare the universal truths of love and loss, resonating with both Ichinose and Kiyotaka on a deeply personal level. His ex-girlfriend breaking up with him and choosing to date his close friend. As Watanabe shared his intimate tale, a sense of empathy and understanding filled the room, bridging the divide between past and present, heartache and hope. In this shared moment of vulnerability, bonds were forged, secrets exchanged, and a fragile trust formed amidst the chaos of uncertainty. In the end, Watanabe's willingness to bare his soul and Ichinose's unwavering support offered a glimmer of solace in the midst of turmoil. Through their shared experiences, they found strength in vulnerability and resilience in the face of adversity, proving that even in the darkest of moments, there is light to be found in human connection.
Despite the awkwardness of the moment, Ichinose remained composed and forthright, acknowledging her unrequited love for Kiyotaka without reservation. This admission, while not entirely surprising, shed light on the depth of Ichinose's emotions and the challenges she faced in navigating her feelings amidst a tangled web of friendships and unspoken desires. As Ichinose and Watanabe engaged in a candid conversation, it became evident that their bond was stronger than mere acquaintanceship. Ichinose's keen insight into Watanabe's feelings for Amikura hinted at a deeper understanding between them, one built on mutual trust and shared vulnerabilities. In offering Watanabe guidance and support in his own romantic endeavors, Ichinose demonstrated her unwavering loyalty and commitment to those closest to her, even in the face of personal turmoil.
Meanwhile, Kiyotaka found himself at a crossroads, torn between his original plans to incite change within the class and the unforeseen developments unfolding before him. Ichinose's proactive approach to class dynamics presented a compelling alternative to Kiyotaka's strategic machinations, leaving him to ponder the potential outcomes of her actions and their implications for the future. As the day drew to a close, uncertainty loomed over the horizon, casting a shadow of doubt over Kiyotaka's carefully laid plans. Whether Ichinose's efforts would lead to unity or chaos remained to be seen, leaving Kiyotaka with a dilemma that defied easy resolution. In the end, the fate of their class hung in the balance, dependent on the choices they made and the paths they chose to follow.
Hashimoto's late-night call to Sakayanagi unfolded with calculated precision, each word carefully chosen to gauge her reactions and advance his agenda. Despite Sakayanagi's composed demeanor, Hashimoto sensed an opportunity to assert his value to Class A and sway the balance of power in their favor.
As Hashimoto broached the topic of potential alliances against Class A, Sakayanagi remained nonchalant, downplaying the significance of such a threat. Her unwavering confidence in Class A's dominance underscored her strategic prowess and unwavering resolve to maintain their position at the top. However, Hashimoto persisted, revealing valuable insights gleaned from his investigations into rival classes' activities. His meticulous attention to detail and willingness to share critical information demonstrated his commitment to Class A's success and his desire to earn Sakayanagi's trust and favor.
Yet, Sakayanagi's astute observations pierced through Hashimoto's facade, uncovering his clandestine meetings with Maezono and his ulterior motives. Despite his attempts to downplay their significance, Sakayanagi remained unfazed, acknowledging his contributions while subtly asserting her dominance. In the end, Hashimoto's efforts to curry favor with Sakayanagi proved both fruitful and precarious. While he succeeded in sharing vital information and positioning himself as a valuable asset to Class A, Sakayanagi's keen insight and strategic acumen reminded him of the precarious nature of their alliance. As the delicate dance of power continued, Hashimoto found himself navigating treacherous waters where every move could mean the difference between success and failure.
Despite Sakayanagi's dismissive attitude towards the information Hashimoto provided, he couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at ruffling her composed exterior. Sakayanagi's unwavering confidence and disdain for external assistance highlighted her fiercely independent nature and determination to rely solely on her own intellect and resources. Hashimoto's attempt to offer support was met with resistance, reinforcing the notion that Sakayanagi operated on her terms alone. As their conversation came to a close, Hashimoto couldn't shake the feeling that Sakayanagi was concealing her unease beneath her calm facade. While he had taken a few hits during their exchange, he remained resolute in his determination to execute his winning strategy and secure victory for Class A. Despite the challenges ahead, Hashimoto remained undeterred, ready to navigate the complexities of their high-stakes battle and emerge victorious.
Chapter 6
The atmosphere in the classroom buzzed with a mixture of anticipation and tension as the special exam approached. The meticulous preparations undertaken by the school to ensure fairness were evident in the adjustments made to the classroom layout. Desks were rearranged, with dividers installed to prevent any form of cheating during the exam. This attention to detail indicated the seriousness with which academic integrity was upheld within the institution. Students observed these changes with a sense of solemnity, recognizing the significance of the upcoming assessment.
Among the students, Horikita stood out for her focused demeanor. Her commitment to performing well in the exam was evident in her disciplined approach to managing her health. A reference to a past experience, where she faced challenges due to illness during a previous exam, highlighted her determination to overcome obstacles. Despite the pressure mounting in the classroom, Horikita remained composed, displaying a resolve to tackle the exam head-on and excel through her own efforts.
As the exam commenced, Sakagami-sensei, assumed the role of overseeing the assessment. His clear and concise announcement of the exam layout and rules set the tone for the seriousness of the assessment. Students listened attentively as he outlined the guidelines for conduct, emphasizing the importance of integrity and adherence to rules during the exam. The presence of an impartial overseer underscored the school's commitment to fairness and impartiality in academic assessments.
The exam structure, displayed on a monitor, depicted the order of classes for solving problems. Alongside this, strict guidelines were outlined, including limited breaks and severe penalties for cheating. These measures reinforced the expectation of integrity and individual responsibility among students. Despite the absence of expected support from peers, Horikita remained undeterred, demonstrating her confidence in her abilities and her willingness to face the exam on her own terms.
The instructions for the special exam, while containing some new details, did not hold any particularly surprising elements. The structure of the exam made it impossible for students to evade attacks or delay them, as each participant faced unique questions. Therefore, there was no opportunity for students to collaborate or cheat by hiding in the bathroom. Additionally, the order of attacks between classes was carefully planned to prevent any clashes between students from different classes, rendering the use of phones during the exam irrelevant. The critical aspects lay in the class arrangements and the sequence of attacks, which determined the strategic flow of the exam.
Horikita quickly assessed the offensive and defensive strategies after reviewing the attack order on the screen. With Ryūen's class no longer a concern, she shifted her focus to developing strategies against Ichinose's straightforward approach and Sakayanagi's formidable class. While Ichinose's class posed fewer challenges, Sakayanagi's sharp intellect and the overall strength of her class presented a formidable obstacle. As an observer, Kiyotaka recognized the importance of these strategic considerations and awaited the unfolding of events.
Despite the strategic planning, there was no time for leisure as the special exam commenced. Reviewing the exam categories, Kiyotaka acknowledged the risk of expulsion associated with being eliminated, particularly in subjects where his knowledge was below average. This unusual rule meant that even a single elimination could jeopardize his standing in the class. Recognizing the significance of this risk, he remained vigilant and prepared to adapt to unexpected challenges.
As the special exam began, Sakagami-sensei signaled the start, and the class quickly moved to select categories and nominees for the first attack. With a limited three-minute time frame for decision-making, there was little room for deliberation. Horikita's firm leadership guided the class through the selection process, reflecting a pre-discussed strategy with Hirata and others.
The strategic selection of the 'English' category, Difficulty Level 1, for the first attack demonstrated Horikita's class's cautious approach. Recognizing the academic stability of Ichinose's class, Horikita's class aimed to secure points through a subject that could be easily evaluated, despite the lack of flexibility in choosing the difficulty level. The decision reflected a calculated move to assess the tendencies of the questions and establish a standard difficulty level for subsequent attacks. However, the effectiveness of this strategy depended on exploiting the weaknesses of Ichinose's class, which might not be evident in academic-related categories.
The defensive nominations revealed Ichinose's class's proactive approach to protect classmates who struggled with English, ensuring the unconditional acquisition of two points. While the move was straightforward, it indicated Ichinose's class's cohesion and strategic planning, albeit at the expense of potential flexibility in future turns. The displayed question, requiring students to rearrange words to maintain sentence meaning, elicited mixed reactions, with academically capable students viewing it as manageable while others found it challenging.
The results highlighted Ichinose's class's academic stability, with two students answering the question correctly and securing four points. In contrast, Ryūen's class faced difficulties, securing only one point in their attack due to the disadvantage of having many students weak in studying. As the special exam progressed, the importance of securing correct answers while on the defensive became apparent, emphasizing the need for strategic planning and effective execution to earn points.
As Sakayanagi's class initiated their attack on Horikita's class with the 'Arithmetic' category, the stage was set for another strategic exchange. The unfolding dynamics of the special exam underscored the significance of decision-making, adaptability, and tactical maneuvering in navigating the challenges posed by the unique format. The 'Arithmetic' category, Difficulty Level 1, presented relatively simple mental math questions, such as multiplication and fill-in-the-blanks, which could be challenging for some students despite the low difficulty level. The presence of seven students in Horikita's class who excluded math as one of their categories highlighted the potential difficulty for those less confident in their math skills. However, the decision-making process regarding Kōenji's protection added an additional layer of complexity to the defensive strategy.
Despite Kōenji's exceptional talent, his lack of proactive participation in special exams raised questions about his inclusion in the protected group. Horikita's decision not to include him reflected a calculated risk assessment based on the exam's expulsion rules. While Sudō initially expressed concern about Kōenji's exclusion, Horikita's rationale for protecting him only after two incorrect answers provided reassurance.
Horikita's successful protection of two members in the defense phase demonstrated a strategic advantage, placing her class in third position after the first turn. The subsequent offensive phase saw three nominees confronted with a multiplication question, revealing the challenge of mental math under time pressure. Despite one correct answer, the results underscored the difficulty students faced in tackling arithmetic problems mentally.
The decision to target Ishikura, one of the strongest math students, raised questions about Sakayanagi's strategy. While Ishikura's abilities made her a less obvious target, Sakayanagi's choice suggested a deliberate approach to exploit potential weaknesses or strategic considerations. Overall, despite some challenges and uncertainties, Horikita's class achieved a respectable start to the special exam, positioning them favorably for future turns. The second turn of the special exam intensified the competition among the classes, with slight differences in scores emerging early on. Horikita's class took their defensive turn, facing the challenge of protecting their members and strategizing against Sakayanagi's class, who changed their chosen category to 'Gourmet Food' with a difficulty level of 1.
However, the defensive strategy hit a snag as none of Horikita's class members were successfully protected. The offensive nominees, including Kōenji, were tasked with answering a relatively straightforward question about dining etiquette, yet Kōenji chose not to respond, leaving the answer blank. This decision drew criticism from Sudō, reflecting the class's frustration with Kōenji's lack of engagement.
Despite this setback, Keisei's genuine mistake in answering the question prompted him to apologize to Horikita, who reassured him of potential future protection if needed. This exchange highlighted the class's dynamic and their reliance on Horikita's strategic decisions to navigate the challenges of the exam. As the battle between offense and defense continued, Sakayanagi's class once again targeted Kōenji in their attack, alongside a new lineup of nominees. This strategic move raised questions about Sakayanagi's ability to read and exploit potential weaknesses in Horikita's defensive lineup, signaling a keen understanding of the strategic dynamics at play.
The dynamics within Horikita's class became increasingly tense as Kōenji's reluctance to participate threatened their standing in the special exam. Despite Yōsuke's attempt to encourage Kōenji to take the test seriously, Kōenji persisted in submitting blank answers, much to the frustration of his classmates. However, in the third round, despite Kōenji's lack of cooperation, the remaining four classmates managed to answer the question correctly, highlighting the potential impact of his participation on the class's performance.
With Sakayanagi's class leading the competition, the pressure intensified on Horikita's class to defend their position. In the fourth turn, Sakayanagi surprised everyone by selecting 'Gourmet Food' for the third consecutive time, this time with an increased difficulty level of 2. This strategic move put Kōenji in a precarious position, as his failure to answer correctly would lead to his elimination from the exam.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Horikita chose not to protect Kōenji, causing confusion and concern among her classmates. This decision was perceived as a betrayal by some, as it appeared that Horikita had abandoned her promise to protect Kōenji from expulsion. However, Kōenji surprised everyone by answering the question correctly, thereby avoiding elimination and proving his capability when pushed to the brink. Sudō mocks Kōenji's success, reflecting the complex dynamics within the class, where personal opinions and relationships intersected with the collective goal of survival in the exam. Kōenji's ambiguous response to Sudō's taunts further added to the uncertainty surrounding his motivations and loyalties.
Despite Kōenji's pointed inquiry, Horikita maintained her composure, deflecting his concerns with a cool demeanor. Their interaction underscored the underlying tension and unspoken agreements that governed their actions in the high-stakes environment of the special exam.
Kōenji's inquiry was met with a nonchalant response from Horikita, who casually dismissed any notion of wrongdoing. Her measured tone and unapologetic stance hinted at a deeper understanding of the situation, suggesting that her decisions were driven by strategic foresight rather than impulsive reactions. This subtle display of confidence hinted at Horikita's calculated approach to leadership, where every action was carefully weighed against its potential consequences.
Despite Kōenji's initial skepticism, Horikita's explanation appeared to resonate with him on some level. His subsequent acquiescence and return to his seat signaled a tacit acknowledgment of her authority and decision-making prowess. This brief exchange showcased the nuanced power dynamics at play within the class, where trust and respect were earned through calculated actions and strategic maneuvering. Meanwhile, the rest of the class observed the exchange with a mixture of curiosity and uncertainty. Sudō's vocalization of concern reflected the general sentiment of the group, who were eager for reassurance in the face of uncertainty. Horikita's stoic response to their inquiries further underscored her unwavering resolve and confidence in her decisions, even in the face of scrutiny from her peers.
As the exam progressed, Horikita's strategic acumen continued to be put to the test. The repeated nomination of Kōenji by Sakayanagi raised questions about her intentions and strategic objectives. However, Horikita's decision not to protect Kōenji proved to be a calculated gamble that paid off, as it effectively diverted attention away from him and preserved his position in the exam. This astute maneuvering earned her the respect and admiration of her classmates, solidifying her reputation as a shrewd and capable leader. Names like Ishizaki, Sotomura, and Ijūin became casualties of the intense competition, highlighting the harsh realities of the special exam. With the first half of the exam concluding amidst heightened tension and anticipation, the stage was set for even greater challenges and strategic maneuvers in the second half.
Despite the mounting pressure and the threat of elimination looming over many students, Ichinose's class remained the only one without any dropouts. However, this seemingly favorable outcome wasn't merely a stroke of luck but a result of Horikita's deliberate tactics. Yōsuke's acknowledgment of Horikita's strategy underscored the depth of her planning and the effectiveness of her approach. By strategically targeting attacks to keep five members of Ichinose's class on the brink of elimination, Horikita applied subtle pressure that forced Ichinose to spread her protective measures thinly. This tactical advantage allowed Horikita to maintain control over the course of the exam, even as the stakes continued to rise.
While Ichinose remained steadfast in her determination to protect her classmates, Horikita's relentless offensive tactics left her struggling to keep up. Despite her best efforts, Ichinose's protective measures failed to safeguard her vulnerable classmates, leaving them teetering on the edge of expulsion with each passing turn. As discussions turned to the challenges that lay ahead in the second half of the exam, the focus shifted to the dynamic between Ichinose's class and Ryūen's class. With Ichinose potentially facing an uphill battle against Ryūen's aggressive tactics, the stakes were raised even higher as the exam entered its next phase. The intricacies of the exam's difficulty levels and success rates provided insight into the escalating challenges faced by the students. As the difficulty increased, so too did the likelihood of incorrect answers, further complicating the strategic calculus for both attackers and defenders alike.
The conversation between Horikita and Kiyotaka during the lunch break delved deep into the intricacies of Sakayanagi's strategic decisions and the underlying motivations behind her targeting of Kōenji. As they analyzed the pattern of the attackers' naming order, a curious anomaly emerged regarding Sakayanagi's persistent focus on Kōenji despite his repeated mistakes.
It became apparent that Sakayanagi's tactics were not merely driven by a desire to eliminate weaker opponents but were rooted in a calculated assessment of the situation. Despite Kōenji's intellectual prowess, Sakayanagi's decision to target him from the outset and then abruptly cease her attacks raised questions about her true intentions. Horikita's astute observation that Sakayanagi may have been aware of the promise made between Kōenji and Kiyotaka added another layer of complexity to the situation. By recognizing the parameters of their agreement, Sakayanagi could have strategically manipulated the circumstances to her advantage, exploiting the loophole created by the promise.
The revelation that Kōenji's Protection Point could serve as a safeguard against expulsion shed new light on the strategic calculus at play. While the risk of losing a point due to Kōenji's elimination loomed large, the existence of the Protection Point provided a buffer against the dire consequences of expulsion. In hindsight, it became clear that Horikita's decision not to protect Kōenji was a calculated move aimed at minimizing potential losses while maintaining the integrity of their agreement. By refraining from expending a protection slot on Kōenji, Horikita effectively preserved their strategic options and mitigated the risk of expulsion for the entire class.
Kiyotaka pondered Kōenji's motivations, speculating that perhaps the hassle of losing his Protection Point outweighed the risk of expulsion. It was a testament to Sakayanagi's shrewdness that she likely anticipated this dynamic and adjusted her tactics accordingly. As their conversation turned to the possibility of information leaks within the class, Kiyotaka raised a crucial concern that extended beyond the confines of the current exam. It was a reminder of the importance of vigilance and discretion, not only for their immediate success but also for future challenges.
Horikita acknowledged Kiyotaka's warning with a solemn nod, signaling her commitment to addressing the issue. With their discussion reaching its conclusion, they turned their attention to the more mundane task of lunch. Despite the intensity of the exam, they couldn't ignore the basic need for sustenance. Kiyotaka's mention of Kei prompted a brief moment of reflection on her situation. Despite navigating the first half unscathed, she remained vulnerable to elimination in subsequent rounds. Her determination to bolster her knowledge underscored the relentless pressure of the exam, even during moments of respite like lunch breaks. With their lunch plans settled, Kiyotaka and Horikita made their way back to the classroom, prepared to face the challenges of the second half of the exam.
The atmosphere in Ryūen's class was tense as they faced the consequences of a lackluster performance in the first turn of the Survival and Elimination Special Exam. Despite their strategic shortcomings, Ryūen remained impassive, his attention fixed on his phone while Hoshinomiya's cheerful instructions went unheeded. As the seconds ticked by, it became evident that Ryūen's inertia was not merely a momentary lapse but a deliberate choice. The nominating time dwindled with each passing moment, a stark reminder of their dwindling opportunities to turn the tide in their favor.
In any other circumstance, classmates might have intervened or questioned Ryūen's behavior, but in this class, such actions were a rarity. The prevailing sense of domination and hierarchy stifled dissent, leaving the students resigned to their fate. Amidst the silent turmoil, all eyes turned to Katsuragi, the steadfast advisor who had earned Ryūen's trust and respect. His stoic demeanor mirrored Ryūen's own, his unwavering loyalty a testament to the dynamics at play within the class. Despite the mounting pressure and frustration, Katsuragi remained unmoved, his actions—or lack thereof—a reflection of the resigned acceptance that permeated the class.
Hoshinomiya's attempt to downplay the significance of their initial setback fell flat in the face of the palpable tension gripping Ryūen's class. While her words were meant to reassure, they only served to underscore the gravity of the situation. As the seconds ticked by in silence, Hoshinomiya's initial concern turned to bewilderment. The students' calm acceptance of Ryūen's prolonged indecision hinted at a deeper understanding among them, one that transcended the usual expectations of a classroom dynamic.
In the midst of this unusual calm, Hoshinomiya couldn't shake the feeling that Ryūen was orchestrating a calculated strategy, one that defied conventional tactics. The unconventional silence hinted at a hidden agenda, leaving her grappling with uncertainty. When Ryūen finally broke his silence and announced the nominees, Hoshinomiya's surprise turned to dismay as she realized the implications of his choices. It seemed that Ryūen had deliberately targeted students close to Sakayanagi, a move that threatened to disrupt the delicate balance of power.
Despite their efforts, Ryūen's class could only successfully protect one student, leaving them vulnerable to Sakayanagi's calculated attacks. As the results unfolded, Hoshinomiya couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for Ryūen's audacity, even as she acknowledged the grim reality of their situation. However, as the rounds progressed, it became evident that Ryūen's strategy lacked the precision needed to turn the tide in their favor. The repetitive nominations failed to yield significant gains, leaving Ryūen's class mired in a cycle of uncertainty and frustration. As the first half of the exam drew to a close, Hoshinomiya couldn't help but wonder at the stoic composure of Ryūen's classmates.
Despite Hoshinomiya's efforts to understand the dynamics at play, Ryūen's class continued to confound her. Their struggles seemed less about their offensive tactics and more about their inability to secure points through successful defenses. It was clear that they lagged behind in correct answers compared to other classes, a fact that hindered their progress. As Hoshinomiya circled the classroom, her observations revealed a startling truth: many students seemed strangely relaxed, their attention diverted to various distractions on their phones rather than the task at hand. While some might attribute this to Ryūen's influence, Hoshinomiya couldn't help but wonder if there was something more at play.
Her scrutiny fell upon Kaneda, who appeared unruffled amidst the chaos. His calm demeanor and focused approach to studying stood in stark contrast to his classmates' apparent indifference. When questioned about his lack of activity, Kaneda's response only served to deepen the mystery surrounding Ryūen's class.
Meanwhile, Ishizaki's blatant disregard for the gravity of the situation, evident in his nonchalant behavior and even his tendency to doze off, left Hoshinomiya feeling both baffled and disheartened. It seemed that Ryūen's class was a puzzle she couldn't quite solve, their actions defying logic and expectation at every turn. As the supervisor tasked with overseeing their progress, Hoshinomiya couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air. Despite her best efforts, Ryūen's class remained an enigma, their motivations and strategies shrouded in mystery.
In the second attack of the special exam, Sakayanagi from Class A strategically chose five nominees from Horikita's Class B: Kōenji Rokusuke, Hasebe Haruka, Hirata Yōsuke, Yukimura Teruhiko, and Onodera Kayano. Hashimoto approached Sakayanagi with a stern expression, questioning her decision to target Kōenji despite his warning that Kōenji might be protected due to an agreement with Horikita.
Sakayanagi explained that while Horikita and Kōenji had an agreement to prevent Kōenji’s expulsion and let him do as he pleased, Horikita wouldn’t waste a valuable protection slot on Kōenji if it meant risking her leadership credibility. She believed Kōenji might deliberately answer incorrectly and saw no point in protecting him repeatedly.
The monitor showed that none of the five nominees were protected. Hashimoto couldn't argue with the result and expressed skepticism about targeting Kōenji, who was likely to answer correctly. Sakayanagi remained confident, predicting Kōenji might not take the exam seriously and could answer incorrectly.
Hashimoto was skeptical but waited for the results. As Sakayanagi predicted, Kōenji answered incorrectly, and Sakayanagi scored a point. In the next turn, Sakayanagi targeted Kōenji again in the same category, causing confusion among her classmates. Kamuro and Hashimoto questioned her strategy, but Sakayanagi was convinced that Horikita wouldn’t protect Kōenji again. The monitor confirmed that Kōenji wasn’t protected. Hashimoto, still trying to understand the strategy, was baffled by Horikita’s decisions. Kōenji made the same mistake as before. Kitō questioned why Sakayanagi didn't expect Kōenji to be protected the second time. She explained that Horikita wouldn’t protect Kōenji unless necessary, saving protection slots for later. Sakayanagi took a calculated risk to exhaust Class B’s protection slots.
Hashimoto suggested targeting Kōenji from the first turn to deplete the protection slots early, but Sakayanagi wanted to ensure Horikita wouldn’t protect him and to invite Kōenji to make a second mistake. This strategy worked as Kōenji made the same mistake again. In the fourth turn, Sakayanagi targeted Kōenji for the third time, in the 'Gourmet Food' category at difficulty level 2, surprising everyone. However, Horikita did not protect Kōenji. Kōenji answered correctly, avoiding elimination, causing confusion for Hashimoto.
Sakayanagi deduced that Horikita had a strategy and was not simply abandoning Kōenji. Kitō suggested continuing to target Kōenji to damage Horikita’s credibility, but Sakayanagi believed Horikita had a different plan and targeting Kōenji might benefit her. She speculated whether Ayanokōji was influencing Horikita's tactics but concluded that Horikita’s growth was due to her proximity to Ayanokōji. Sakayanagi was aware of the tactical battle she was engaged in with Horikita but wasn't overly concerned about it. Her main worry was whether multiple classes were secretly teaming up against hers, as that could pose a significant threat. Despite her investigations and surveillance since the special exam was announced, she had found no evidence of such alliances. She had to judge during the exam whether an alliance existed, but so far, nothing seemed unusual about the offenses and defenses of the other classes.
By the end of the first half of the exam, Sakayanagi's Class A was in the lead with 29 points, closely followed by Class B, which was only one point behind. Hashimoto, who had been absorbed in the results displayed on the monitor, noted the close competition. Sakayanagi invited Kamuro Masumi, who had been eliminated from the exam, to join her for lunch. Kamuro agreed, albeit noting Sakayanagi's lack of concern for their opponents. As they walked out into the corridor, Kitō stepped aside to let them pass. Kamuro questioned when the invitation had been extended, to which Sakayanagi replied it was over the phone just moments ago. Kamuro also asked why Hashimoto wasn't invited, and Sakayanagi explained that she had invited him, but he declined due to being targeted by Ryūen and making two mistakes already. Kamuro chuckled dryly, imagining Hashimoto frantically gathering information on his phone.
The cafeteria was unusually empty, likely because many second-year students were still glued to their phones in their classrooms, saving time and avoiding elimination. Those in the cafeteria were either leaders with no risk of elimination, students already eliminated, or those like the narrator who didn’t think much about it.
Horikita and the narrator sat at their usual tables with their meals. They noted the implicit divisions in seating areas by year, though there were no explicit rules for it. As they discussed this, Sakayanagi approached them, asking to join. She had no meal, explaining that Kamuro and Kitō were buying lunch for her. Soon, Kitō arrived with trays, clearly showing his support for Sakayanagi. Sakayanagi invited Kamuro to join, who hesitated, not keen on getting involved in more of Sakayanagi’s schemes. Kamuro’s attitude showed confidence in Sakayanagi, likely bolstered by their first-place standing at the end of the first half. The narrator greeted Kitō, who acknowledged with a slight nod.
Sakayanagi and Horikita exchanged polite but pointed remarks about the pressure of the first half of the exam. Suddenly, Ryūen appeared, sitting next to Horikita without asking, prompting Kitō to stand in hostility. Sakayanagi calmed Kitō, dismissing Ryūen as simply hungry and not a threat. Ryūen’s arrival stirred tension, especially when he taunted Kamuro and Kitō about their potential elimination. Sakayanagi retorted, emphasizing that her class was currently in first place while Ryūen’s was last. Ryūen pointed out that even if his class came last, he’d only lose expendable students, whereas Sakayanagi risked losing key players like Kamuro, Yamamura, Kitō, or Hashimoto if they made mistakes. He warned that any eliminations in her class would hurt her more, suggesting that Horikita might exploit this to inflict more damage in the second half.
Sakayanagi dismissed Ryūen’s strategy as inefficient and immature, noting his focus on targeting a maximum of about eight students, specifically those close to her, like Kitō, Kamuro, and Hashimoto. Despite this, Sakayanagi managed to maintain first place due to her high rate of successfully protecting students in the first half of the exam.
Ryūen admitted his intent to target Sakayanagi’s close associates but criticized her protection strategy. He pointed out that if Class A came in last, Sakayanagi would face more severe consequences due to potential eliminations. Kamuro and Yamamura were particularly highlighted, with Ryūen suggesting that Sakayanagi valued them highly behind the scenes. This revelation surprised Kamuro and others present. Horikita questioned why Ryūen targeted Yamamura, noting that she didn't seem like a significant threat. Ryūen explained that Sakayanagi valued Yamamura's hidden abilities, indicating she was as important as Kamuro. This information was new to Kamuro, who seemed taken aback.
Ryūen further insinuated that Sakayanagi's evaluation of people wasn't based on their OAA scores but on their obedience and usefulness to her. This remark led to a tense exchange between Kamuro and Sakayanagi, with Kamuro seeking confirmation about her and Yamamura’s value to Sakayanagi. Despite Ryūen's provocations, Sakayanagi remained composed, inviting him to interpret her actions as he pleased. Horikita chose not to be influenced by Ryūen's attempts to sway Sakayanagi's judgment, maintaining her focus on the exam’s objective without aiming to expel anyone from Sakayanagi’s class.
Deciding there was no more to gain from his provocations, Ryūen switched the topic to other classes, particularly Ichinose's. He noted that Ichinose’s class had made it clear they intended to avoid any eliminations, evident from their absence in the cafeteria. They were likely prepared with food and focused on not wasting any time. Ryūen criticized Ichinose’s strategy as foolish, stating she was willing to lose to avoid any expulsions, a tactic he deemed ineffective in a battle where ruthlessness was necessary to avoid being hurt. Horikita reflected on the first half of the exam, noting that Ichinose’s extreme determination to avoid eliminations could work to Ryūen's advantage if she continued this strategy in the second half. Ryūen could potentially force her to use up her protection slots, thereby suppressing her class’s ranking.
Ryūen then declared his intention to target Horikita's class next, expressing confidence in overcoming the challenges posed by protection slots. Sakayanagi, having anticipated his thoughts, acknowledged the difficulty in protecting classmates likely to answer incorrectly, but she remained composed, ready for the upcoming challenges.
After his declaration, Ryūen abruptly stood up and left, leaving a powerful impression of his determination and a message for Horikita to watch silently as he made his moves in the second half of the exam. As Ryūen walked away, Horikita and Sakayanagi resumed their meal, contemplating the challenges ahead. Ryūen’s confident demeanor hinted at significant moves in the second half, and with the exam about to resume, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation for the strategies each leader would employ.
As the second half of the special exam began, Horikita stood at the podium, rallying her class. Her strategy was clear: to exploit any weaknesses she could find in Sakayanagi's class. Despite the uncertainty and the potential for leaks, she believed she had found a viable strategy from the information gathered during the preparation period.
For the 11th turn, Horikita launched her first attack against Sakayanagi’s class, opting for a ‘Literature’ problem with a difficulty level of two, spending one point in the process. The result was mixed—while one student was successfully protected, three out of four students got the question wrong, netting Horikita's class two points after accounting for the spent point.
Sakayanagi's class, feeling the pressure, responded aggressively by spending two points and choosing a ‘Sports’ problem with a difficulty level of three. This bold move targeted Ryūen’s class, which had been trailing behind. The result was surprising: all five of Ryūen’s nominated students were successfully protected, securing a perfect score of five points and closing the gap significantly. This was a first in the special exam, showing Ryūen's class in a new light despite their earlier eliminations.
Next, it was Ryūen's turn to attack Ichinose’s class. His attack was less effective than expected, with three students being protected and only one mistake made, resulting in four points for Ryūen’s class, bringing their total to 28 points and tying them temporarily with Ichinose’s class. Finally, it was Ichinose’s turn to attack. She chose the ‘Sports’ category with a difficulty level of one and nominated ‘Ayanokōji Kiyotaka,’ ‘Miyamoto Sōshi,’ and ‘Karuizawa Kei.’ The choice of category was manageable for most, but it presented specific challenges. While Ayanokōji felt confident about historical or rules-based sports questions, he was less sure about current events. Kei, on the other hand, might excel with questions related to sports she was familiar with, such as volleyball, which she frequently watched on TV.
As Horikita's class faced Ichinose's attack, posing a question about baseball rules. Ayanokōji and Miyamoto correctly answered "Infield Fly," but Kei, despite her recent studying, got it wrong. This was her first mistake, but it added to her anxiety. On the other hand, Miyamoto celebrated his success with high-fives and shared joy with his classmates, demonstrating how knowledge from unexpected sources could be beneficial.
This round netted Horikita's class four points, temporarily putting them in first place, surpassing Sakayanagi’s class. However, Sakayanagi's class quickly reclaimed their position with four correct answers in the next turn, earning four points. Ryūen's class continued to surprise everyone. They achieved a perfect score again, successfully protecting all their nominated students for the second consecutive turn. This streak of luck or strategy was astonishing and seemed improbable, making Horikita question if it was merely luck or something more. As the next round unfolded, Ichinose's attack nominated Ayanokōji, Matsushita, and Kei again. Kei, already on edge from her previous mistake, panicked at the sight of her name. The category for this round was "News," which Kei might handle well, but Ayanokōji needed to be cautious, having already missed a question in this category before.
The tension in the special exam continued to rise as Horikita's class faced another critical moment. The latest question posed in the "News" category—“What does ‘tapiru’ mean?”—left Ayanokōji stumped. The slang term, meaning "to drink bubble tea," was outside his realm of knowledge, leading to his second mistake in this category. In contrast, Kei managed to answer correctly, providing some relief to the class. With Matsushita also answering correctly, Horikita's class secured four points. However, Ayanokōji’s two mistakes now made him a candidate for elimination. Horikita couldn't help but express her disappointment, causing Ayanokōji to retreat inwardly.
The 13th turn saw Horikita's class attack with the "Kanji" category at difficulty level 1. Horikita smoothly nominated the first four students but hesitated on the last one, struggling to manage the remaining information about Class A’s strengths and weaknesses. In a moment of indecision, Kushida, who had not yet been selected for any round, casually suggested choosing Satonaka. Horikita accepted Kushida’s advice without questioning it. Satonaka, unprotected, answered incorrectly, costing the class a point. When asked how she knew about Satonaka’s weakness in kanji, Kushida nonchalantly replied that such information could come from various sources.
Horikita expressed gratitude to Kushida for her help, though Kushida seemed indifferent. Despite her demeanor, Kushida's contribution was crucial, providing valuable information about opponents' weaknesses due to her extensive network and keen memory. During the 13th turn, Ichinose’s class attacked, and Horikita chose to protect Karuizawa, which proved to be the right move as Kei’s name appeared on the list of successfully protected members. However, Kei was visibly anxious, feeling targeted. Horikita reassured her, stating that Ichinose likely wasn’t targeting her personally but would likely shift targets next time.
In the 14th turn, Ichinose’s class attacked again. Horikita, advised by Kushida, decided to protect Kei once more, which turned out to be the correct decision. Kei was protected successfully again, marking four consecutive nominations. Despite these successes, the situation was tense. While Horikita’s and Sakayanagi’s classes managed to balance offense and defense, Ichinose’s class had a high rate of successful protections. Ryūen’s class showed impressive momentum with four consecutive perfect protection results, suggesting more than just luck was at play. For Ryūen, losing wasn't a significant issue as long as he eventually won. This mentality allowed him to endure defeats, believing that ultimate victory mattered more. However, he faced a formidable obstacle in Ayanokōji, a seemingly ordinary individual who concealed a brutal and unparalleled prowess. This encounter left Ryūen's spirit broken and devoid of hatred, as he acknowledged Ayanokōji's unique abilities.
Despite this recognition, Ryūen had no intention of remaining under Ayanokōji's shadow. His goal was to defeat Ayanokōji before graduation. To achieve this, he needed to first overcome Sakayanagi, the leader of Class A. Ryūen viewed Sakayanagi as the primary obstacle to his ultimate goal. As the second half of the exam began, Ryūen shifted his focus to Sakayanagi's main entourage. He aggressively took charge, pushing aside Hoshinomiya, the teacher in charge, and addressed his class. He emphasized that the point difference was only ten, making a comeback feasible with a few perfect scores.
Ryūen faced internal dissent from Tokitō, who criticized his approach. Ryūen, undeterred, promised to demonstrate his strategy's effectiveness. He emphasized that his earlier call for his classmates' efforts was just a ploy. When it was Ryūen's turn to defend against Sakayanagi's attack, he swiftly nominated five students for protection, regardless of the category or difficulty. This included Tokitō, who had just criticized him. Ryūen's rapid decision-making raised suspicions that he might be trying to outmaneuver Sakayanagi's tactics.
The results were astonishing: all five students successfully defended against the challenging sports category, earning a perfect score. Ryūen continued this strategy in the subsequent turns, achieving consecutive perfect defenses in the 12th, 13th, and 14th turns. This unexpected success baffled both his classmates and the overseeing teacher, Hoshinomiya. Ryūen's approach was unconventional. Unlike other leaders, he focused on masking his intentions and exploiting the element of surprise. By doing so, he managed to reverse the momentum of the exam, achieving a stunning turnaround and putting significant pressure on Sakayanagi's class.
From the beginning of the special exam, Ichinose adopted a strategy focused on minimizing the risk of expulsions within her class. She continuously reassured her classmates to stay calm and avoid getting nervous, emphasizing that they would protect each other and prevent anyone from being expelled. This reassurance was not just a comforting gesture; it was part of her tactical approach.
Ichinose's primary objective was defensive: to keep the number of eliminated classmates at zero. By doing so, even if her class ranked the lowest, there would be no expulsions. However, she also aimed to win, intending to achieve both goals by dragging opponents into a defensive posture themselves. As the first half of the exam progressed, Horikita's strategy became clear. She aimed to increase the number of students who made two mistakes and were on the brink of elimination. This pressure would force Ichinose to use her protection function on those students, effectively managing her resources and prioritizing her class's safety.
Ichinose expressed gratitude to Horikita for her wise and compassionate actions, as this approach allowed her to earn points without directly targeting her own class for eliminations. Her focus remained on protecting her classmates and avoiding reckless actions that could lead to unnecessary expulsions. Despite her defensive stance, Ichinose did not hesitate to target students in Ryūen's class when necessary. By the end of the first half, four students from Ryūen's class had been eliminated due to Ichinose's attacks. This strategic choice was driven by the need to secure a victory and eliminate the threat posed by other classes, even if it meant making unavoidable sacrifices.
Ichinose reflected on a previous exchange with Ryūen. Before the exam started, Ichinose proposed an alliance with Ryūen to avoid any expulsions from her class, suggesting they both play defensively. She offered Ryūen an incentive: 25 guaranteed points and insider information on Horikita's targets for five out of ten turns, which would give him a strategic advantage. Ryūen's response was skeptical, questioning Ichinose's ability to withstand Horikita's attacks and expressing doubt about the proposal's sincerity. He was wary of potential deception, especially since a clumsy lie wouldn't fool him. Ichinose, however, had no intention of negotiating with Horikita and was determined to protect her classmates by making it through the first half of the exam without any eliminations.
Ichinose's strategy involved protecting the five students most at risk of elimination, anticipating that Horikita would target these individuals to test her resolve. By consistently using protection slots for these five students, Ichinose hoped to divert Horikita's attacks to other students, thus avoiding eliminations. Despite Ichinose's efforts, Ryūen ultimately rejected the proposal, citing his own plans and strategies. Ichinose acknowledged the rejection but resolved to continue her no-elimination strategy independently, despite the risks involved.
Ryūen was skeptical but intrigued, and after some negotiation, he offered a counter-proposal, thus only half rejected her initial proposal. Ryūen agreed to avoid eliminating Ichinose's classmates without taking the guaranteed points. Instead, he asked Ichinose to accept points from him as necessary during the second half of the exam, without providing detailed explanations. Ichinose pondered the offer and decided to trust Ryūen, agreeing to his terms. This arrangement, although risky, was based on mutual understanding and strategic alignment. Ichinose’s goal was to protect her classmates from elimination, and Ryūen’s goal was to maintain control over the score.
As the second half progressed, Ryūen demonstrated his capability by successfully defending his class against Sakayanagi's attacks. Ichinose, observing the results, realized that Ryūen's actions were in line with their agreement and acknowledged his strategic prowess. She felt relieved knowing her classmates were safe from expulsion, thanks to their unspoken alliance. During the 16th turn, despite the ongoing challenges, Ichinose nominated Karuizawa Kei, maintaining her strategy.
As the 15th turn of the special exam commenced, the competition among the four classes became fiercely close. Ichinose’s class was leading with 42 points, closely followed by Horikita and Sakayanagi’s classes, both with 40 points, and Ryūen’s class in third with 39 points. The initial advantage Ryūen’s class had gained was now nearly exhausted, placing them at risk of falling into last place. The pressure began to take its toll on the students, with four eliminations already causing significant panic among them. Despite the mounting anxiety, Horikita maintained her composure. She stood before her classmates, who were visibly distressed, and addressed them with a sense of calm and determination.
Horikita acknowledged the gravity of their situation, recognizing the challenges posed by Ichinose’s leadership and Ryūen’s recent string of perfect scores. She admitted that a guaranteed victory was beyond her ability to promise at this stage. However, Horikita emphasized the importance of unity and perseverance. She conveyed that despite the uncertainty, they must continue to fight together until the end. Even Yōsuke, who often played a supportive role, listened attentively to Horikita’s words. Horikita's call to action was simple: "Believe in me."
During the 15th turn, Ichinose's class targeted Horikita's class. Despite the intense pressure, Horikita managed to successfully protect Karuizawa Kei, Satō Maya, and Miyake Akito. The remaining two students answered correctly, earning them a perfect score and a comeback of five points. However, the relentless nominations against Kei didn't cease, causing more fear than relief among the students.
Kei, overwhelmed and fearful, couldn't understand why she was being persistently singled out. This obsessive targeting continued into the 16th turn, where Horikita could only protect Kei and Nishimura Ryūko. The anxiety among the students grew, with the clear intent appearing to be the deliberate elimination of Kei.
The relentless nominations continued:
- 17th turn: Horikita protected Kei and Hirata Yōsuke.
- 18th turn: Horikita protected Kei, Hasebe Haruka, and Onodera Kayano.
- 19th turn: Horikita protected only Kei.
- 20th turn: Horikita protected Kei and Sudō Ken.
Throughout all 10 turns of the second half, Ichinose's class consistently targeted Kei.
Chapter 7
Sakayanagi shifted her attack focus to Ryūen’s class. The night before, Sakayanagi received advice from Hashimoto about potentially eliminating Shiina Hiyori, suggesting Ayanokōji might react emotionally to her expulsion. Although initially interested, Sakayanagi quickly realized that eliminating Shiina would be inefficient given Ichinose’s ruthless strategy.
In the 11th turn, Sakayanagi’s class failed to score as Ryūen’s class perfectly defended. Suspecting internal information leaks, Sakayanagi suspected a traitor within her class. She decided to silently pass the names to the teacher to prevent further leaks, but the 13th turn also resulted in perfect defense by Ryūen’s class, confirming her suspicion. Sakayanagi considered methods of transmission, including phone cameras, and decided to have all students place their devices on their desks. For the 15th turn, Sakayanagi whispered the names to the teacher, resulting in Ryūen’s class failing to defend perfectly, indicating the strategy worked. Morishita Ai publically confirmed the presence of a traitor who had used electronic means to leak information, something the class had all quietly suspected.
Sanada, agreeing with Morishita's suggestion that information might be leaking, proposed checking everyone's phones. However, Sakayanagi refused to halt phone usage, arguing that they needed their devices to find hints for solving questions. Despite three consecutive perfect defenses by Ryūen's class, Sakayanagi insisted on continuing without changes. This decision caused confusion and concern among her classmates, who were unsure why necessary actions weren't taken to prevent the leaks. Sakayanagi believed that identifying a traitor without solid evidence was too risky and could cause more harm than good. Instead, she decided to focus on avoiding last place rather than aiming for first. Despite their efforts, they couldn't defend effectively against Horikita's attacks and ended up in last place by six points, with Ichinose aiding Horikita through a traitor to sink Sakayanagi's class.
Accepting defeat, Sakayanagi announced the need to expel one eliminated classmate. The five eliminated students—Kamuro, Yamamura, Sugio, Toba, and Machida—were all considered equal in contribution. To decide fairly, Sakayanagi proposed drawing lots to determine who would be expelled. This unexpected decision caused anxiety among the eliminated students, but Sakayanagi insisted it was the fairest method. She emphasized that objecting was pointless and that the leader's decision was final. Morishita prepared the lots, with one colored paper indicating expulsion among five total lots. Sakayanagi asserted that refusal to participate in the draw would be interpreted as giving up, ensuring all eliminated students were forcibly involved in the process.
Sakayanagi asked who would draw first. Machida, suppressing his objections, volunteered and drew a plain lot, celebrating his luck. Encouraged, Sugio and Toba also drew uncolored papers, leaving Kamuro Masumi and Yamamura Miki. Kamuro, indifferent, stayed back while Yamamura, paralyzed by fear, couldn't move. Kamuro prompted Yamamura to draw, but she was too scared. As Kamuro approached the lottery box, Sakayanagi declared that refusal to draw meant expulsion, targeting Yamamura. Kamuro intervened, suggesting they draw simultaneously. Sakayanagi agreed, and Kamuro forcibly guided Yamamura to draw. Morishita offered two lots. Kamuro moved Yamamura's hand to clutch a lot, then took one herself. Kamuro comforted the anxious Yamamura, and both opened their hands simultaneously. Kamuro drew the colored paper, accepting her fate calmly and congratulating Yamamura for surviving. The other students fell silent, processing the outcome.
The final rankings were announced: Ryūen's class in first place with 69 points, followed by Ichinose's class with 62 points, Horikita's class with 59 points, and Sakayanagi's class in last place with 53 points. Ryūen's class gained 100 class points for their victory, while the second and third-placed classes lost 50 points each, and Sakayanagi's class lost 100 points. The students of Sakayanagi's class felt relieved to have narrowly secured third place, despite the overall defeat. Chabashira-sensei dismissed the class, announcing that more details, including the expulsion from Class A, would be given the following week.
In the midst of the excitement, Ichinose suddenly burst into the classroom and apologized to Kei, who had been stressed by consecutive nominations. Horikita explained that Ichinose's nominations were meant to help their class gain points. Ichinose had intended to discreetly assist Horikita's class to weaken Sakayanagi's position, which Horikita realized and used to their advantage. Ichinose's strategy involved repeatedly nominating Kei to ensure she was protected, thus maintaining Horikita's class's points. This collaboration between Ichinose and Horikita was crucial in the fight against Sakayanagi's class. Despite Kei's initial confusion and anxiety, she was relieved by the explanation and Ichinose's apologies. As Ichinose left, Horikita received gratitude from her classmates for her strategic actions, helping the class to maintain their position in the rankings.
Kiyotaka spoke with Horikita, analyzing their loss and noting that Ryūen and Ichinose's classes seemed to have struck a deal during the second half of the exam. This cooperation led to Ichinose's class securing second place without a single elimination. Horikita agreed, pointing out that such collaboration would have required premeditated planning from the first half of the exam. Both she and Sakayanagi had not anticipated this collusion. Kiyotaka suggested that someone within Sakayanagi's class must have leaked information to Ryūen, which allowed him to predict and counter their attacks. This act of betrayal was unprecedented, especially for Class A, which had maintained its top status since enrollment.
Horikita speculated that the traitor might have been motivated by a significant reward, such as 20 million points, which would allow them to transfer to another class. However, this theory seemed risky, as the traitor would eventually face repercussions from their class and potential targeting by other classes in future exams. Despite their disappointment at not securing first place, Horikita and Kiyotaka acknowledged that Sakayanagi's class suffered the most by falling to fourth place. Horikita expressed her frustration but resolved to channel it into future exams. Horikita decided to confront Ryūen's class to understand their strategy, while Kiyotaka chose to go home, admitting he wasn't in the mood to handle Ryūen's possible provocations.
Kiyotaka wanted to check on the state of Ryūen's class, which he expected to be in high spirits after their victory. When he arrived near Class D, he found Hiyori looking down from a window with a stern expression instead of her usual soft smile. Noticing her mood, Kiyotaka quietly approached and mimicked her, gazing out the window. He saw Ryūen and some of his entourage, including the noticeably jubilant Ishizaki and the majestic Katsuragi, heading towards Keyaki Mall.
Commenting on their victory, Kiyotaka suggested they might be planning to celebrate. Hiyori responded naturally but revealed she had declined an invitation to join the festivities, feeling uneasy about celebrating. She expressed her concerns about Ryūen's methods, which, despite leading to their current success, left her doubtful about the sustainability of such strategies.
Kiyotaka acknowledged her point, recognizing that Ryūen's unconventional approaches, while effective this time, might not ensure future victories. Hiyori emphasized that although they had won, they missed a valuable opportunity for growth. Kiyotaka agreed, suggesting that while Ryūen's presence was a strength, it also posed a risk to the class's long-term success. Hiyori, still looking concerned, mentioned going to the library and invited Kiyotaka to join her, but he declined.
After checking on Ryūen's class, Kiyotaka wanted to see how Ichinose’s and Sakayanagi’s classes were doing. Ichinose’s class seemed the same as usual, having managed to avoid the lowest position while keeping the number of eliminations to zero. Their strategy, although risky, proved successful as they finished in second place. Horikita, on the other hand, had deliberately pushed five students to the brink of elimination in the first half of the exam and then allied with Ryūen in the second half to achieve zero eliminations, ultimately assisting in relegating Sakayanagi’s class to the bottom.
It was after school, around 5 p.m., and the campus was mostly empty due to the cancellation of club activities because of the special exam. In Class A’s classroom, Sakayanagi was seated at Kamuro’s desk, waiting quietly. As the promised time approached, Hashimoto entered the room.
Sakayanagi greeted him, and they began a reflection meeting about the exam. Hashimoto expressed disappointment but couldn’t blame Sakayanagi entirely, suspecting that the class’s information had leaked to Ryūen. He was particularly upset about Kamuro’s expulsion, despite his usual indifference towards who got expelled as long as it wasn’t him.
Sakayanagi and Hashimoto discussed how the information might have been leaked, concluding that it was likely done via a phone. Hashimoto questioned why Sakayanagi didn’t take countermeasures when Morishita suggested it, such as confiscating phones. Sakayanagi explained that she assumed the traitor would have countermeasures in place, and a clumsy investigation could have caused more confusion.
As they talked, Hashimoto slowly walked towards the podium, questioning if it pained Sakayanagi to cut off Kamuro, given their two-year-long camaraderie. Sakayanagi responded that Kamuro wasn’t a special existence to her, demonstrating her strong resolve. Hashimoto, who had a liking for Kamuro, admitted he would have tried to get someone else expelled instead and felt he wouldn’t be able to get over her expulsion anytime soon. Sakayanagi confronts Hashimoto about being the traitor who leaked Class A's information to Ryūen, leading to Kamuro's expulsion.
Despite initially denying the accusation, Hashimoto eventually admits his betrayal when Sakayanagi presents evidence, including photos of him with Ryūen. Hashimoto explains that he leaked the information in exchange for 500,000 private points, which he saw as insurance rather than a significant betrayal. He chose Ryūen as the recipient because of Ryūen's willingness to use such tactics. Hashimoto clarifies that his primary motive wasn't the points but rather leveraging his position and securing his future. Sakayanagi acknowledges his reasoning but still views his actions as a significant betrayal.
Sakayanagi deduces that Hashimoto used a borrowed phone to avoid detection, demonstrating her deep understanding of his tactics. Hashimoto admits his betrayal was a strategic move, believing Class A would inevitably fall behind Class B without drastic action. He argues that his betrayal was intended to create a winning chance, despite the personal risk. Hashimoto’s ultimate goal is to convince Sakayanagi to bring Ayanokōji into their class, believing this is the only way to secure Class A's future success. He asserts that only by combining Sakayanagi’s and Ayanokōji’s strengths can they ensure an unbeatable class and maintain their position as Class A.
Sakayanagi, angered by Hashimoto's statements, counters that she and Ryūen both desire worthy adversaries rather than merely seeking to be in Class A. Hashimoto's plan to bring Ayanokōji into their class is met with Sakayanagi’s firm opposition, emphasizing that neither she nor Ryūen prioritize graduating as Class A over facing formidable opponents. Sakayanagi points out Hashimoto’s reluctance to use a class exchange ticket and declares she will not allow Ayanokōji to join Class A. Hashimoto resolves to continue his efforts to convince Sakayanagi, acknowledging the risk of expulsion.
Epilogue
Near the staff room, Sakayanagi waited alone until Kamuro emerged, surprised to see both her and Ayanokōji there. Despite Kamuro's impending expulsion, Sakayanagi wanted to say goodbye. Kamuro was surprisingly accepting of her fate, revealing that she had expected such an outcome eventually and had already planned to transfer to another high school if expelled. Sakayanagi, showing rare vulnerability, expressed regret over Kamuro's expulsion, but Kamuro dismissed it, indicating she never harbored strong attachment to the school.
As they walked together, Kamuro advised Sakayanagi to find a replacement quickly and continued on her way. Despite her bad leg, Sakayanagi hurried to keep up, eventually stumbling and needing Kamuro's assistance. Kamuro commented on Sakayanagi's mixture of intelligence and perceived foolishness, ultimately requesting that Sakayanagi ensure the class traitor faced the same fate as she did. Sakayanagi promised to do so, ensuring that the class wouldn't suffer as a result. Kamuro, leaving the school for the last time, reminded Ayanokōji to ensure Sakayanagi kept her promise to address the class traitor. Despite feeling the responsibility was unnecessary, Ayanokōji agreed. Kamuro then walked away, signifying her final departure from the school, leaving Sakayanagi behind. Sakayanagi, taking her time, acknowledged that Kamuro had remained true to herself until the end. As Ayanokōji also exited the school, it was clear that Kamuro’s departure was more significant to Sakayanagi than she had initially shown.
Ayanokōji took a walk and eventually reached a bench where he waited for Sakayanagi. When she arrived, he confronted her about the impact of Kamuro’s expulsion. Sakayanagi initially dismissed it, stating that Kamuro wasn’t particularly exceptional or obedient, implying her expulsion had little impact on the class. However, Ayanokōji persisted, suggesting that Sakayanagi’s usual composure seemed shaken, indicating that Kamuro’s departure had affected her more than she admitted. Despite Sakayanagi’s attempt to maintain her stance, Ayanokōji pointed out that acknowledging Kamuro’s impact would mean admitting a mistake in her decision. He emphasized that Sakayanagi’s strength sometimes led her to overlook and fail to support the weaknesses of others.
Ayanokōji challenges Sakayanagi's approach to leadership and decision-making. He suggests that Sakayanagi’s detachment and pride led her to a miscalculation when she allowed Kamuro to be expelled, arguing that true strength would have involved keeping Kamuro and compiling reasons to expel others. Despite Sakayanagi’s initial dismissal, Ayanokōji points out that her usual composure is shaken, and that Kamuro’s presence had more significance than she acknowledged. Sakayanagi admits that she underestimated the impact of Kamuro’s expulsion and reflects on her lack of genuine connections throughout her school life.
Sakayanagi eventually acknowledges that, despite her initial detachment, Kamuro had become a friend. This realization marks a shift in her understanding of her own emotions and the value of her relationships. Ayanokōji encourages her by stating that recognizing this weakness can also be a source of strength as Sakayanagi bows her head and leaves. Ayanokōji reflects that Kamuro’s expulsion, though initially a loss, has the potential to make Sakayanagi stronger and more resilient.
With about two months left until the year-end exam, Ayanokōji contemplates his next moves, including his plans involving Karuizawa Kei and Ichinose Honami. He recognizes the evolving dynamics and the need for each class to maximize their potential. As he prepares for the upcoming challenges, Ayanokōji aims to leave a lasting impact on those around him
